Custom Works on TOYSREVIL (Jan/2/2011)
This week we figure collective custom-works showcasing toys from Singapore's Phu!, New York's NEMO and Lance Lamont, and finally Blamo Toys' Mikie Graham. CLICK THRU for snaps and the lowdown of these works!
"Custom Toys" are a huge part-n-parcel of the toy scene, and with the said scene exploding in the past couple of years, our eyes (and hearts, perhaps) are spoilt for choice - with near everyone getting in, and working their butts off, both professional and hobbyist. TOYSREVIL will attempt to present the cool and awesome ones in a collective manner, to get your "customs"-fix all sorted out! Phu!< does it again and completed a cool custom-Hammerhead figure (from Joe Ledbetter x Wonderwall - refer insert pic) for a private commission. Sporting his carving technique, breathing apparatus set-up and insignia flag (a "must" for all this custom commissions), Phu! continues to jazz up the scene, IMHO. Custom-painted Bambaboss (from ThreeA Toys) from New York-based artist Mr Munk aka Lance Lamont, in intense colors and bravado. Possessing the wondrous techno-color-grime of the urban streets, Lance may brand himself as a "newcomer", but his works are here to stay! Peep more images on his flickr.
Duo custom offerings from Mike Mendez aka NEMO - first up the frosty udder named BEN above - a customedr MadL - made to celebrate the New Year, as well as his birthday! (Thay's right, Nemo's a "NY-Baby"!). Ben's a gingerbread-snowman, and he is available online thru Tenacious Toys - under his very own (custom)memo section. Also made available here was the 5 inch tall "Dead Paradise" Tiki carving shown below (released mid-Dec 2010).
Though this particular tiki may not be his best work, iMHO (look no further than these custom Marshalls) - NEMO sculpts sumthin' awesome, and folks would do well to keep an eye on his work as he is beginning to release works thru Tenacious Toys! And I can post+pimp them as non-commissioned works too!
This is both "custom" and "retail" - as Blamo Toys releases their KRANG NIMBUS figures. Based on their Nimbus character, Krang is currently available (along with all of the remaining Nimbus customs) at Blamotoys.com
Here's a write-up to creator Mikie Graham's custom: "Inspired by the TMNT cartoon's of his childhood, Mikie took his Nimbus figure and transformed it into "Krang," the disembodied brain and ultimate bad guy from the cartoon television series. Mikie's custom uses the shape of the Nimbus figure and tweaks it, adding an extra head and turning the original Nimbus face into Krang himself; residing within the belly of his android behemoth. Completing the transformation Mikie added Krang's "brain tentacles" that snake out the figure to operate the tiny joysticks which control the hulking colossus." [More]
