Teaser for Giant God Warrior by Hideaki Anno
The above 76-second teaser is for a short film titled "Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru" (Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo / "巨神兵") done by director Hideaki Anno. And if the giant mecha looks familiar, tis because it is inspired by the Giant God Warriors in "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", for which Anno served as key animator! And the intense visual parallel to EVA? Because Anno directed Neon Genesis Evangelion! To see it "live", is somewhat exhilarating … and it is done without CGI, but with traditional stop-motion too! Check out screengrabs via my Popcorn-X FB-album!
"Created for a gallery exhibition with Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno, Giant God Warrior Appears In Tokyo is a live action short film based on creatures from Hayao Miyazaki's landmark Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind - a film on which Anno served as key animator. Created entirely without CGI, this is old school Japanese scifi executed through the extensive use of miniatures." ~reported Twitchfilm
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo is presenting the full short as part of its "Kanchō Anno Hideaki Tokusatsu Hakubutsukan" (Curator Hideaki Anno's Special Effects Museum) exhibition - which runs from July 10 to October 8. According to Anime News Network, Good Smile Company "is selling a figma figure and a 50-centimeter-tall (20-inch-tall) polystone replica of the Giant God Warrior at the exhibition in July, and it will then offer them online after the exhibition ends on October 8."
