"A Day With Sofubi Toy Maker" by VICE Japan
INTRO: "Japanese Sofubi impresario Mori Katsura of RealxHead is the subject for the latest installment of A Day With, an ongoing video series from premier sub-culture magazine VICE.
Fig-lab was uber-excited to lend a hand to producer/director Anthony Knight (1K films) on this digital short. Tony's mad cinematic skills especially shine in the scene of Mori working "man-to-man" with veteran painter Goto-San. Make sure you turn on CC for English subtitles." -shared Don "Datadub" Kratzer
ONE: If you do not follow my (personal) Facebook, you might not know I am a HUGE fan of VICE - particularly "VICE Japan", having spend at least once a week (night) watching their docus online / on youtube.
TWO: The feature is sofubi, and showcases the scene in the East we/I do not see enough of, always a distance away, a "tourist" I always remain. So this video is an UBER treat.
"The designer toy movement has inventively made it's way to the "sofubi" scene, an abbreviation for "soft vinyl" in Japanese. For more than 10 years, Mori Katsura of Realxhead has been creating original action figures using his 60 year-old process, which includes Mori's secret weapon, a 70 year-old master painter named Goto. Vice follows Mori, an innovator in the indie soft vinyl scene where he collaborates with Goto to produce new toys."
