TOYSREVIL's TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014
So you've read my Top Ten Toys for 2014 (It's okay if you haven't, do feel free to CLICK HERE to read them ALL MUAHAHAHAHA), and you know that "just 10" ain't gonna cut it from me, people! So today I present; TOYSREVIL's TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014! Counting down from #20 thru to #11 of my fav picks of toys that I own in my personal collection (versus what is available "out there") - Read-ON to see if they match any of your favs!
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #20: FIRE-CATZILLA from Joe Ledbetter
WHY: I do not really own a whole lot of Joe Ledbetter toys. In fact, I could count with one hand how many pieces I have in my humble collection, and that indeed s such a sad state of toy-affairs, I agree. And thanks to Joe himself, I did not miss out on his FIRE-CATZILLA! [Details Here / Buy Here].
Awesome that it is self-produced from the creator himself, this comes after his FIRE-CAT release (the OG vinyl used to be on my wish-lists too :p), and stads tall at #20, screaming out his victory over mortal toys - with the word-motif an extra PLUS in my books!
Bolstered by my additional enjoyment of the Gareth Edwards's GODZILLA in 2014 (not the best incarnation, but still fun to watch) - Stay tuned for a full review of this behemoth on this blog!
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #19: BABY GOON from TOUMA x WonderWall
Have you ever dreamt of walking to an old bookshop and discovering a stack of old classic comicbooks? Comicbooks you have never seen the covers of, and were going for a song? And you had the joy of cherry-picking them? I literally had constant dreams exactly like that, when comicbook-frenzy was the sole factor in my geeklife … and when I discovered TOYS, that wish transferred into my dreaming-life.
I found this particular item, bagged and in near pristine condition, at my neighborhood flea market, somewhere I'd NEVER expect to find stuff like this! Amidst the McDee used Happy Meal toys and gasaphons, I spied with my one eye (the other patched), under the illusive dim glow of a street lamp, and could not believe what I saw.
It had belonged to a relative, who had since left the hobby, and left the item in care of his family, who did not give two hoots about what it was or how much it originally costs (even the there was still a price sticker on the header).
Long story short, I asked, paid for it, and walked away, hoping to return another day, for when they said they would bring MORE from the box left behind. It has since been quite a few months, and I have nerve seen any such toys from them again.
BABY GOON by TOUMA x Wonderwall is one of the older toys I had blogged about but never truly had a chance or ability to procure. As well the presence of BABY GOON represented a a "Dream Came True", a reward from patience, and that is a toy blessing I will cherish in 2014 :)
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #18: TROOPER BOY from INS
I enjoyed it's larger brethren when I first blogged about them, but never truly gave it much thought as it is a size that would not fit my personal collections, as awesome as the notion is. Then when I saw the re-sized pocket version at last years' STGCC, OMG did I fall for it! And being gifted with it from Lawrence at INS was such a plus! (Thanks again buddy!)
Looking very much like a kid playing Star Wars by putting on a Storm Trooper helmet and grabbing a blaster, this design reeks of modern nostalgia, and is possesses a non-confrontational design aesthetic that both pleases and acts like a well-intentional "homage".
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #17: TEQAGON from Jagnus Design Studio x Hidden Fortress Manila
A much underrated release as far as I am concerned, with TEQAGON a collaboration between Jagnus Design Studio and Hidden Fortress Manila, with this angular adaption of Quiccs' original TEQ63 resin figure, mirroring the form of Arnold Austria's BOTOTOY wood-block collectible, making this a pretty swell all-Filipino art toy!
Released at the 2014 Singapore Toy Games and Comic Con, I managed to purchase this from Quiccs shortly after the con ended, so that was pretty nifty. It was a pity there wasn't a TOYSREVIL-Edition to be had of this baby tho! LOL
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #16: R2D-CAT x C3P-CAT from CATMASK
The Thailand-based toy-creator and resin slinger known as CATMASK is extremely prolific and has been doling out sweet adaptations of Star Wars characters, adapted to his CatMask--aesthetics, in various stages of sculpting too, not just solely "re-paints". A prime example f his work can be seen in this pair of R2D-CAT and C3P-CAT, and boy are they awesome!
Seeing these in person provided a whole new dimension to the images seen online, with a strong indie-vibe in delivery and execution still, featuring details befitting an indie one-man-production. Simply awesome, I insist!
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #15: EVANGELION KUBRICKS & BE@RBRICKS from Medicom Toy
I am in trouble. in 2013 I was laden with a desire for EVA-themed BE@RBRICKS (still am, mind you), and in 2014, I would no longer resist EVA KUBRICKS! Not having accessibility to them helped deter my wanton-desires for them … but once the opportunity arose (in the evil locale known as the "Sunday Flea Market @ China Square Central"), the floodgates to my toy-heart burst open with a thousand grabby-hands reaching out for more!
Above is a sole EVA Kub, and there are a lot of 2-Packs to be had, from past releases (I had procured a few, but only of the human operators/pilots) and am on the lookout for more Evangelion-mechas!
Funnily, I had no strong desires for the actual-mecha figures as much as these "super-deformed: incarnations tho … meanwhile I am still up for toys-for-ad-space contra-deals out there, so stay in touch, people! :)
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #14: YEODAH from Yeo Hon Beng
Boggles me how underrated this figure has been. It actually physically bothers me, not just that it was made by friends, but because it is AWESOME!
Designed by Yeo Hon Beng from Detention Barracks, as sculpted and cast by Daniel Yu, this Star Wars action-figure sized resin non-articulated collectible possesses an "aloha" hand-gesture in place of the Jedi-master's head, with this first piece in a clear-tinted blue "hologram" vibe that works particularly well above a spotlight.
Launched at STGCC 2014, the only thing needed to complete this piece, is a header card drawn by Hon Beng!
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #13: MAEMAEMON MAD*L from MAD
Out of all the splendid MAD*Ls I had been gifted with and owned in 2014 - which included the Phase 4 and 10YR Editions - the sole piece which rocked my Top 20 List at No.13, had to be the MAEMAEMON design, especially since it featured design by Jeremy's daughter herself, and signed by her too - which is an important aspect of the toy, for me, which I cannot explain but for the sheer joy of being a part of something that was created and shared in Jeremy's family, and provides it with a richness that differentiates itself from the proliferation of singular artist-entity productions out there … but that's just me :)
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #12: BABY HORNS (Series 2) from Hands In Factory
Without a shred of doubt, are the awesomeness of this trio, the second BABY HORNS release release from Hands in Factory (Series One was #12 on my Top Toys of 2013), and especially special for me was the character named "WILL.P", with his Leg Prosthetics-giving a new dimension to the term "Will Power". IMHO!
TOYSREVIL TOP TWENTY TOYS FOR 2014 - #11: GOLD DEADBEETS from Scott Tolleson
Very narrowly missing placing in the Top Ten, was Scott Tolleson's GOLD DEADBEET in Number 11! This particular edition is elusive, and it currently can not be purchased, but to be gifted by Scott himself, for which I had the honor to meet at STGCC last year (or maybe it was a "trade" for my Hulk action figure? LOL J/K) and I heart it heaps! Makes up for missing out on his Kookie No Good edition, I guess … just a little … Heh.
I need to find an elevated base for this to stand on in my collection display, a cut above all toys! LOL
