In recent days leading up to it's August 31st premiere on Netflix, we've seen a all-out charm offensive with plenty of acknowledgement of the live action actors by the creator of One Piece, and dedicated servings of gratitude possibly meant to placate and convince "One Piece" manga+anime fans, no doubt taking in the lessons of previous live action adaptations on Netflix (like 2021's Cowboy Bebop & 2017's Death Note). "Comparisons" are inevitable.
How many percent of viewers watching will be fans+followers of the original source? And how many will be casual watchers tuning into the story/property for the first time? Will THIS adaptation be any different from the ones that've come before?
From comicbooks to Hollywood blockbusters in the U.S., from webtoons to television series in South Korea, from manga & anime to tv and feature films in Japan, the result is a mixed bag, especially adaptations of the latter. I've had wonderful experiences with Rurouni Kenshin ("Samurai X"), mixed bag with Full Metal Alchemist and Bleach, and cringed at Attack On Titan, so realistically, everything is up in the air, innit?
