flash vs riddick
:: MOVIES / TOYS ::
t'was quite a "unique" parallel (and yet "wasn't at all" ~ "red" versus "blue"? :p), when i watched Flash Gordon and The Chronicles of Riddick, in the same day.
i didn't expect to enjoy Flash Gordon that much ~ what with the rip-roaring action and pseudo-cliched-dialogue and i dare say; quite an exceptionally designed movie!
crisp and clear-cut, with a just a slight tinge of kitsch and a whole lotta comic-book-sensibilities, i commend the production and costume designer. from comic to silver screen, the mood was kept surprisingly intact and no small wonder this has gathered it's own legacy and fans (and even toys).
and on the other side of the universe, more than a coupla decades later ~ we have The Chronicles of Riddick, a heavily designed movie (IMHO) and really quite exceptional!
witness the gothic and grime of the Necromongers and their environment. even the mercs and Crematoria were all decked out in sweat and dirt ~ loads of "dark-tech" (*i like*) and i have no trouble at all viewing this flick over and over again (5th viewing this time round, i think :p) ~ another humble kudos to the design team (see prodcution stills @yahoo movies). and now they're considering a sequel? *cool*

01. 1/6th Prince Vultan from Flash Gordon
02. 1/6th Ming The Merciless
02. 1/6th Riddick (with interchangable Necromonger suit)
03. 1/6th Necromonger figure
personally, i'd buy anyone of these figures, as compared to say: Star Wars? i reckon tis becoz at the end of the day, tis about how the toy affects you and how you can relate to the toy, innit? "design-wise", i'd choose these guys anytime! (not saying the others are designed "badly" or anything like that, yeh?) ~ tis about playability too, innit? ... but then again, that's just my own opinion and choice, innit? *heh*
