virgin comics

:: COMICS ::

the first ever time i pickedup a (digest-sized) Gotham Comics book, was when i was travelling India; in '02 (becoz i needed my comic-fix lah) ... t'was a reprint of Spiderman's 9/11-story (featuring John Romita Jr's art) ... and years on in, i've only pickedup a handful of other mixed titles (again becoz i needed my comic-fix and there weren't any around where i was at, anyways ...) and now out-pops Virgin Comics? *wow*

"Richard Branson (Virgin) has joined with Gotham Entertainment group, Deepak Chopra, and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (whom both started Gotham Studios Asia prior to Branson's involvement) to launch Virgin Comics and Virgin Animation. The comics arm will be headquartered in New York, with the animation division located in Bangalore, India."

when i first read about it, a heap-fulla skepticism filled the air - is it just another money-making scheme some billionaire had thought up? (of coz it is lah). are we (comic-readers) ready for yet another start-up comics-company, promising yet unbounded adventures into comicdom? to fall by the wayside like many a other companies? (CrossGen, et al) heck, ya can only go so far with Spiderman-India and reprints, innit? (cool Spidey-artwork by Jeevan J.Kang tho :p)

but of coz after seeing the drawings/illustrations here and here = totally allayed my fears ... they truly look exciting interesting! (looks loads like Jae Lee's art, dunnit? IMHO) whilst seemingly retained it's "cultural flavour" and identity that which is "the other" soon-to-be-booming market (besides China); India and we can only but be excited and hope that these "pin-up art" would parallel the interior artwork, innit?

*altho, i'm pretty sure somewhere down the line, there'll be movies and toys - based on these properties, coming out in cinemas and toyshelves, innit?*

all that, and John Woo's gonna be creating an original comic? - dude's a busy man in 2006, innit? *heh*

all i can say is, as long as the comics don't come out like this commercial did, i'll be relieved! [via adblog] *heh*
