TOYSREVIL: how did the concept of this custom come about? and how long did it take?

DR.BAO: the concept of the custom begun one day when Spive went to my house and we started by reading thru wikipedia about the 5 Chinese Elements (which the Vinyl Elements show is based on) ... there was a section that explained the relationship (kind of cycle) between these elements - which we found was the most interesting aspect to elaborate on our concept. And we wanted to create elements that have some relationship between them, so people can believe more in what we're doing, rather than just throwing characters together ... So we choose to work mainly with the Fire, Wood and  Earth elements. There's also the Metal element, but it's in the accesories of one of the character ...

BAO: Jack (from VP) sent me a BUD and a Sqwert (from Jamungo) ... But we needed another figure for a character that will complete the whole set ... so we just take our usual all-round platform = the 3'' Dunny without the ears (it's almost our trademark!!!!)

And as you probably know this show will feature pretty much all the best toy customizers in the industry... and because we knew that the level will probably be high, Spive and I, we're like: "hey we have to work hard to come prepare and ready for this show!" - so after almost 3 months of work, our project is finally done.....and it's called: Vinyl Fantasy: The Final Elements!!!!

TRE: so how did the 5 Elements eventually mesh with the Final Fantasy concept?

BAO: So here's the scenario - I've always told Spive that I had want to do something related to the legendary RPG Final Fantasy game / world ... so we created a scenario like it's a scene from the game ... It doesn't actually have to exist in the game, our goal was to take the idea of a fight scene in a Final Fantasy world and apply it to our work...

So....with the idea that FIRE element generates from WOOD, and that EARTH can "neuralize"  FIRE - we begun building up our pieces that way. the BUD figure was the perfect platform to use to work the fire element, with that big bomb head easily transformed into a big fireball ... As for the body, we decided to make it like if it was a tree - so basically it's like a tree composed of WOOD that generates the big FIRE head of the character.

BAO: And to neutralize that fire, we need some EARTH element, so here comes TITAN; a big creature compose of rock, which we utilized the Sqwert vinyl-plaform.

TRE: and who is that lil character with the wizard's hat?

BAO: well, I was like; "how can we do to make a connection between the 2 characters?" - and that's where the Final Fantasy idea came in ... so I decided to use a 3'' Dunny and sculpt VIVI, a black mage :)

BAO: Vivi was lost in the forest and had gotten attacked by a big creature compose of a tree body and a big fire head ... and because Vivi is a magician, he can cast a magic spell and call upon Titan to come to his rescue! (because Titan's an EARTH element and can neutralize FIRE) and so Titan arises from the ground!

TRE: wow. that is a lot of thought and work going on into this custom project, Bao! can you tell us more about the sculpts and what you guys did?

BAO: You understand that we had to sculpt a lot for this project, because we wanted to created the real effects of the elements, so we had to go in 3D and sculpt everything.

BAO: From the BUD we sculpted the body into a tree to create the wood effect and then sculpted a fire ball with a face in it for the head ... the challange was to try to find a way to create the illusion that the fire is moving even if it is solid - so when I painted it, I try to give the most deepness I can by mixing and using a lot of variations in the red, orange, yellow and white colors...

For the Sqwert, we decided to make it come from the ground because we thought that the shape of the figures just give us the opportunity to exploit it and to use just the head ... We then sculpt both hands of the character from scratch. The main goal was to give to people the impression that we just took a big rock in which we carve and sculpt a face out of ...

And because we wanted to put a weapon in Titan hands, we choose the make a kind of sword...it give us th opportunity to incorporate in a cheap way (heheheh!!) :) the METAL Element!!!!!! hahahhaha......sooooo cheap!!!!!!! :)

TRE: but highly effective tho! LOL! and of coz how can we forget your diorama?

BAO: And as usual we completed the set by creating a big diorama in which we made "groundbreaking rock" where we see the hands and head of a big creature appearing from the ground!!!!!

TRE: schweet! clever title tho ... anything else you'd like to add about the customed project NVC Crew has done>

BAO: so for the title, we switched out everything and came up with: Vinyl Fantasy: The Final Elements!!!!!!!!! - So it's like if it was a chapter of the series!!!!!!

and as for the finished custom, we had tried to do something that respected the theme of the show, and at the same time, we had wanted to do something that can stand as a whole set and has a concept behind it.......

TOYSREVIL: excellent work so far, Bao! IMHO - my deepest thanks for sharing with us!
