Toy-Preview: Kidrobot Black 2 / SSUR Skull by Russ Karabalan x Kidrobot
From Hypebeast comes a preview of Kidrobot Black's next upcoming release (previously teased here) featuring a full black skull with relief patterns, and gold teeth! HB mentions this to be the design of Russ Karabalan of SSUR. While more "collectible" than a "toy" (nobody said otherwise either innit?), this is quite an "interesting" release for KR, and a collaboration with a streetwear brand, no less (as opposed to recognized "art toy designer") ~ hell, I think it looks lushly-awesome!
Neither release dates nor product details are as yet revealed, but do not expect the item to hang around for too long. Stake out Black.kidrobot.com where the item will be released online (eventually).

ReplyDeleteThis has to be the dumbest thing Kr has done yet. This looks like something you would get a Hot Topic. I think i saw the same thing at a party supply store during Halloween. KR has the power to make anything and there are so many good artist and ideas floating around in our scene, why this?
So...is this supposed to be "tough?" I'm not sure who they are trying to appeal to here, certainly not anyone who collects KR toys. How is putting a pattern on a skull and coloring the teeth even considered a design?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the comment from David. When there are so many artists that could have made something truly original, a mold of a skull is a major disappointment.
Did you see the Grey whale skeleton at the MOMA by Gabriel Orozco? They illustrated the whole thing with graphite. It was breathtaking! The SSUR Skull is of the same genre with a hot grill. By the way you are correct it is not a design it is art.
