Event: Art Toy Charity Auction & Zoo City Book Signing by Lauren Beukes @ Forbidden Planet (July 29 book-signing)

EVENT-PRESS: South African author and art toy fan Lauren Beukes will be signing an exclusive pre-release hardcover of her latest novel ZOO CITY at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8JR on Thursday 29th July (from 6–7pm). To help raise awareness of this event, Forbidden Planet are pleased to be assisting in Lauren’s ‘ZOO CITY’ ART TOY CHARITY AUCTION.

Donated by the Cape Town-based Am I Collective, the Bares are very limited edition vinyl blanks (standing 40cm tall / above-right), and features artwork by the area’s foremost vinyl artists. An online auction will run from mid July to early August on Bid Or Buy. The Bares are raising money for the Suitcase Project.

Willeen le Roux is a graphic designer and illustrator who loves words, whimsy and wonder. She has a range of high profile clients but is best known for illustrating Cosmo’s sex positions and her quirky homeware range Die Spens. Bi-Polar Bear will be guesting at Forbidden Planet for the signing event.

Clement de Bruin grew up in the small town of Ceres, but now lives and works in Cape Town, working as an illustrator for the Am I collective. He finds inspiration for his work in the streets of his city.

Joey Hi-Fi is the alterego of illustrator & designer, D. Halvorsen. Operating from his secret underground lair in Cape Town, he enjoys working on a variety of projects from book covers to logos, comics, t-shirts and packaging for the likes of New Statesman, Angry Robot, Bizarre Magazine, Hilfiger Denim, ENI, FHM, and Wired Magazine UK. He has just completed the cover illustration/design for the Zoo City novel.

The Suitcase Project:

The Bares are raising money for the Suitcase Project, which helps refugee children from war-torn African countries that have arrived in Johannesburg without parents, friends or family. The Project tries to help them deal with the trauma of their flight and arriving in a strange, sometimes hostile adoptive country.
