EVENT-PRESS: Eccentric City - Rise and Fall, presents a collaboration between Japanese artist, Keiichi Tanaami and the Singaporean art and design collective, :phunk. TRANSMISSION: LAB, a studio project between :phunk and LASALLE College of the Arts, contributed to its production. The exhibition explores the visualization of Tanaami and :phunk’s vision of their cities of Tokyo and Singaore communicated through the use of mixed media and the site-specific installation of Tatebanko. ABOUT KEIICHI TANAAMI

Keiichi Tanaami was born in 1936 as the eldest son of a fabric wholesaler in Kyobashi, Tokyo. After graduating in 1958 from the Faculty of Design at Musashino Art University, he worked for a production section at the advertising company,Hakuhodo, before moving on to making works on animation, lithography, and illustration. In 1975, he was appointed as the first Art Director of Playboy (Japanese Edition). During his career he experimented with motion pictures, some of which were shown in film festivals and exhibitions throughout the world, such as Oberhausen and Edinburgh. He has been a professor of Kyoto University of Art and Design since 1991. In Oct 2010, he will have a solo exhibition with NANZUKA UNDERGROUND at Frieze Art Fair in London.

ABOUT :phunk

Formed in 1994, :phunk consists of four designers Alvin Tan, Melvin Chee, Jackson Tan and William Chan. Their works reference to the neo-pop movement and contain a postmodern design sensibility consisting of elements drawn from Chinese mythology, craft, Hong Kong wuxia, Japanese manga and otaku culture. The Singapore-based artist/designer collective received President Design Award (Singapore) in 2007 and has participated in numerous group exhibitions including the Animamix Biennale: From Modernity to Eternity at Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai (MoCA) 2007.
