Covering Vinyl+Splash Event @ Fully Booked (Nov 26) by Victoria Tiongson

The inaugural Vinyl+Splash Event happened at Fully Booked, The Fort on November 26th - featuring a one-day-only affair where Vinyl Toys and Comic Books collided and provided attendees a luscious spread of 'art' from pop culture. Organized by Vinyl On Vinyl and Comic Odyssey, this has become one of the few events I hope to be attending one day! Today we have the honor of having Ms Victoria Tiongson sharing with us her coverage and impressions of the event! (Thanks, Victoria!!!) Uber-thanks to also Marvene Rom Munda for making and sharing this event video with us all! = Read-ON!

VICTORIA TIONGSON: Arrived at the Vinyl+Splash Event a little after 1pm when everyone was still having lunch or were on their way to lunch. There were a couple dozen people walking around and admiring the pieces in the exhibit. The place was divided into two: Comic Book Artists’ side and the side of the Vinyl Artists. The venue was still relatively bare and the artists still had one-on-one time with their fans and visitors. Not so long after though, the people started pouring in and the place started to feel like a mall supersale, to say the least.

VICTORIA TIONGSON: All the Vinyl Artists were seated behind a long table. Behind them on a grill affixed on the wall hung their names, a few of their paintings and some t-shirts. On the table, there was an array of postcards, stickers, pins, toys, and what-nots that people could purchase as souvenirs or collectibles from their favorite Vinyl Artists. The event was a huge gathering of some of the most prominent Filipino Vinyl Artists: Gabby Tiongson/Diko, Ungga, Dee Jae Paeste, Nemo Aguila, Sigmund Torre, Whoop, Ramona Dela Cruz-Gaston, JP Cuison, Spencer and Stephen Uy/Rotobox.

VICTORIA TIONGSON: The artists’ exhibit composed of paintings, sculptures, and other renditions of the different superheroes and villains. Each piece of art had the unique feel of the featured artist. No two pieces were alike and every form of media was exploited. Onlookers were amazed no doubt as cameras kept flashing everywhere and countless “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” were heard all across the room. It was honestly overwhelming to take it all in and a once-around was definitely not enough.

VICTORIA TIONGSON: Activities lined up for the day included an Art Jam where all the Vinyl Artists collaborated to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece on a wooden board, and the Live Art, where the artists doodled for their fans, and doodle to death they did! People bought postcards of their favorite artists and asked them to doodle on them while others came prepared with their own notebooks and sketch pads to add to their art collection. Once in a while, one of the artists would start working on the Art Jam piece and eventually each of them just kept adding and adding.

VICTORIA TIONGSON: Of course this was all for a good cause: proceeds from the artworks would go to the United Nations’ World Food Program (UNWFP) which would feed hundreds of children in Mindanao. The highlight of the night was the bidding for the Art Jam piece. People started off bidding by writing down their bids on a piece of paper beside the painting but soon enough it turned into a bid war and people were shouting their bids right before the auction was closed. In the end, the Vinyl Art Jam piece sold for P25,000 to Dr. Victoria Tiongson, mother of Vinyl Artist Gabby Tiongson/Diko. Representatives of the UNWFP couldn’t be happier and the crowd clapped their hands at the success of the event and the fact that such amazing art could turn empty stomachs into warm hearts.
