#throwbacktoythursday: Dr Destruction
DR DESTRUCTION is a 8.25" (21cm) tall vinyl figure from U.S.-based Muttpop, created by Jerry Frissen, featuring sculptwork by SyteR, with a multitude of colorway editions released, between 2007 to 2009.
This particular - and only version I own - is known as the "Red Tide Rising Comrade DR DESTRUCTION Smersh Edition" - featuring a collaboration with Frank Kozik, with this colorway limited to 500pcs, released circa 2008.
What I liked about this character (and mostly all under the Muttpop banner), was that they were "original character" creations from the "Lucha Libre" (anthology) comicbook series - which also saw Tequila, El Panda, Red Demon and King Katch being made into collectibles too.
The evolution/path of "Comicbook" to "Toys" has always been an interest of mine, and in this instance, the illustration-style/depiction in printed form led itself perfectly into the visual aesthetics of "art toy", IMHO. The notion of "indie lowbrow" vibes strong in these characters, who were even poised to become feature film roles at one point too!
But alas those are in the past, and we have but toys on ou shelves to remind us of times before … Truthfully, I've always wanted to own El Panda and Tequila (both sculpted by Monster5) an perhaps one day I will … meanwhile I have this good Doctor (More images HERE on Facebook) ... :)
"Dr. Destruction is the leader of LES FORMIDABLES, the first genuine group of French superheroes. His heroic intentions are mainly cultural: Dr. Destruction is appalled with the peasant-like ways of Americans and came to East LA to teach them the rudiments of “Les Bonnes Manières.”
He drives the pride of the French automotive industry: a 1979 Citroën CX Présidentielle: 2.5 tons of solid Parisian iron with the power of 75 horses, fueled by the purest of diesel. Some people suspect that Dr. Destruction isn’t really French. While it is true that he has no qualms sipping American brewed coffee, his reputation as a flip-flopping back-stabbing surrenderer cements his Country of origin. His skull adorned cane hides a sharp blade that, he claims, killed the fifth member of LES FORMIDABLES: the one who mocked Jerry Lewis. Destruction uses this very same blade every morning to spread brie on his baguette."
