The Dark Knight Spoiler Post
***BE WARNED: THIS ENTIRE POST IS FILLED WITH MOVIE PLOT / STORY SPOILERS***
And so for months, the rumor mill and sneak-machines were on over-drive, pumping and leaking info and pics thru the cyberhighway - along with the online virals and "official" marketing hype - perpetrated by all and sundry (of which I'm guilty of, as well) in an information onslaught not dedicated for a mainstream movie for quite a while in my muddled memory, along with Transformers and literally any retro-based genre-flicks in the last 5 years ("Awareness" plus "Memory" is a powerful concept indeed, IMHO) ... and today - on July 17th at 3:50pm (GMT + 8hrs) in a darkened cinema hall at Downtown East, Singapore - ALL my built-up queries were answered within a 2 and a 1/2 hour juggernaut that was THE DARK KNIGHT (REVIEWED HERE - sans spoilers) ... and this particular post will serve specifically as a SPOILER POST for those who do not intend to catch the film, but have questions that needed to be answered immediately.

***YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED***
*Note: Spoilers attached to individual characters instead of directly to story ... gotta leave some for folks who may change their mind to watch the flick, innit? HAH.
BRUCE WAYNE / BATMAN:
- Wayne nearly gets his identity exposed, and nearly outs himself as The Batman willingly.
- has the fortitude to court someone else's (Dent's) girlfriend aka Dawes, but nearly chose to ditch his role as the Batman ... what a dog LOL
- changes his suit becoz he needed to be able to turn his head, and protect himself from dogs - the barking kind, not the skirt-chasing ones.
THE JOKER:
- yes, it is white face-paint.
- no, the facial / mouth scar wasn't that obvious actually, altho he talks about it constantly.
- does dress up as a nurse (to coerce Dent) and a policeman (to kill the Mayor).
- did disguise himself as a dead body in a black body-bag (to kill a mobster), but he was not dead then.
- did not die in the end.
- Heath Ledger was brilliant, altho not genius as everyone has him hyped up to be, IMHO.
- Joker was anarchy personified, but hell, he made a lot of sense in some warped way.
- no, I do not condone his actions.
HARVEY DENT / TWO-FACE:
- does turn into "Two-Face" and not just for a little end sequence cameo - Dude goes around and does shitte in both broad daylight and at night.
- Dent's / Two-Face's face was burnt by flames, not acid.
- yes, it was Dent lying in the hospital bed when Joker visited.
- the leaked images of the Two-Face make-up does not do justice to the final version - not as juicy as peeps indicated tho, but hella scary.
- does use his coin (a little too often, IMHO). and tis a "trick" coin with both heads on each side. one side does get burnt.
- Two-Face will not be in the next Batman movie as he did not have the power to defy gravity ... or did he?
COMMISSIONER JIM GORDON:
- lives to star in the next Batman-movie.
RACHEL DAWES:
- eventually joins her former boss (last "seen" in Batman Begins) for a permanent vacation.
SCARECROW:
- appears only in the beginning of the film and has no relation to The Joker.
TUMBLER / BATPOD:
- The Batpod DOES emerge from within The Tumbler.
- I heart the Tumbler.
- I heart the Batpod.
BATCAVE:
- if there ever will be a Bat Cave, it very nearly was at the basement R&D Department of Wayne Enterprises.
- Other than that, tis a underground bunker near a wharf ... will there be a Part 3 of the franchise to see the completion and operation of the infamous Bat-Cave?
OTHERS:
- Edison Chen shouldn't have bothered with his blink-n-miss cameo, really.
- Chin Han does Singapore proud with loads screen-time with Freeman and Oldman - altho he clould brush up a tad with his Mandarin, spoken amidst the Cantonese-speaking guards (altho no one mentioned he was a HongKonger lah :p)
- mobile phones will rule the world.

Hey TRE I just got back from the movie and was absolutely blown away!! I agree that Ledger was brilliant but no way Oscar Worthy. Also I do not believe that Two Face died. Batman fell from the same height and he was ok. I believe they are telling Gotham citizens that he is dead to give them hope....to let them know that "Gotham's White Knight" died fighting for his original beliefs and not alive as Two-Face. In fact in the comics Two-Face states several times that "Harvey Dent is dead...its Two Face now. Just my two cents. ^^ I'm gonna see it on IMAX tomorrow. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteDarren: "Also I do not believe that Two Face died. Batman fell from the same height and he was ok."
ReplyDeletebut batman got padding! LOL - but you may be right ... the ambigous fate of 2face remains still!
enjoy your imax experience duder! - hope there may be a watchmen trailer? lol - cathay downtown east didnt show squat lol
Yeah I'm sure they could play it either way...(1)why isn't Two-Face in Part III? Well he fell and died in TDK. (2)Hey why is Two Face in part III? Well Harvey Dent died in TDK but Two Face lives. Haha
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the sequel...I'm kinda mixed about wanting a Part III
I want to see part III to see closure and end the series on a high note. TDK was so depressing and I want to see Batman recognized as a hero by Gotham. I also want to see more of Two Face!!! He is my favorite Bat villain.
On the other hand I don't know how they'll top TDK. No villain will have the screen presence that the Joker brought and that'll hurt part III if they choose to make one. Sadly I think it will eventually be done (with or without Chris Nolan who is an absolute genius). Cheers !
p.s. Get some sleep you stay up too much.
Oh yeah they showed one trailer where I watched it...the movie with Russell Crowe and Dicaprio. I think they cut out the trailers cause the movie was so long (didn't seem long to me though) and they wanted to maximize showings.
ReplyDeletei like that they've taken up a "Year One" sorta timeline (rem when Joker mentioned "a year ago"-yada yada?) and i personally hope that they may thread along this lines, rather than blow it up and "Five Years Later" - Wayne needs to get a Robin or some schtick like that = can die.
ReplyDeleteanymore fantastical villains with super-powers is going to blow this shindig wide open ... unless they dare play a Superman team-up angle - which frankly, NOT for this particular universe ... wanna play JLA? go ahead but outside of this particular franchise, IMHO.
my fear is, without Nolan (bexcoz he did such a bang-up job of it - his fault! LOL) it'll eventually devolve into *merchandizing*
*shudder*
i remember in Spiderman 2, when Parker was unmasked while he stopped the train from falling into the river, and the citizens carried him back yada yada - that was sweet. But for Batman? Gotham must always fear and hate him, IMHO - then WE can root for him! LOL
the only trailer i got was Quantum of Solace, and Wall*E of coz :p
i wanna sleep but also wanna kitbash a 1/6th batman! (since i cant afford a Hot Toys' one : /) - but maybe a Elseworld's version LOL
cheers, D!
Really? You guys dont feel that Heath Ledger deserves an Oscar for Best Supporting Role? I have seen less worthy performance winning that overhyped statue =D
ReplyDeleteHadrian:
ReplyDeleteI wouldnt argue violently with "Best Supporting Role" - but has people been talking about best actor or supporting? and it also depends on who else is being nominated in the category, isn't it?
I feel so god darn clever for spotting the tumbler/batpod thing!
ReplyDeleteas you should, Kenn!
ReplyDeletethe sequence when that happened really got me into a fanboy excitement moment lol
Wah I didn't think my name was that common... hey other hadrian, are you mogwai from SGCollect? Cos there is an almost identical comment there about the 'overhyped statue', lol.
ReplyDeleteI just watch TDK yesterday, and my sentiments largely coincide with what's been posted here. Two-Face's fate remains unrevealed (it was mentioned that his reputation died, but not implicitly that Harvey Dent has died). In the case of Jim Gordon's ruse where there is considerable effort given to relay his death to the audience, I think Two-Face will most likely live to see another Batmovie.
Heath Ledger's performance is impressive, but I feel even if he is a contender, there may not be enough material for the judges to assess. It would be great if he gets a nomination for his effort, but a win would be a longshot.
It's going to be damn tough to top this one. Christian Bale did a great job and has been overlooked I feel, in view of Ledger's performance and death. It's not easy to make Batman an interesting character in the presence of super-cool villains, but Bale has pulled it off and has even humanised Batman somewhat. A truly remarkable piece of work by all involved. Except Edison Chen.
2 "Hadrians"? hhhmmm
ReplyDeletepersonally if there's anyone in TDK-lore which i'd nominate for best supporting actor - would be Michael Caine as Alfred - man-servant and silent sifu to Bruce, IMHO.
hello
ReplyDeletedo you have the url to find this splendid costumes test pictures
(and others)???
it's a press kit / internal release for press explotation ?
Thx a lot ^_^
DARTH: they were readily posted out on the Dark Knight myspace bulletin board - so i doubt if they are sneaks :)
ReplyDeletetoysrevil> good point, still a good 5 months before 2008 ends =D but no other actor or actress left a bigger impression in me brain. any other worthy contenders (not from TDK) in your books? please share =)
ReplyDeleteHadrian> yup, mogwai on sgcollect, juuan on others..
Hadrian> oh ya, i am also the same hadrian whom sold the Miracleman HC to kurtcobain731 LoL
ReplyDeletehadrian/juuan: "any other worthy contenders (not from TDK) in your books? please share =)"
ReplyDeletehave not watched much movies to list im afraid. you seem to be the expert here, so i'll leave the choices up to you :)
well, there is the Al Pacino/Robert DeNiro team-up movie Righteous Kill coming up... not sure if it is Oscar-worthy but hey, it's DeNiro and Pacino as bad cop/bad cop =D check out the trailer on apple.
ReplyDeleteThat said, the Bat franchise probably needs one of these guys to make a better sequel than TDK. Either that or Morgan Freeman takes over as Batman. Haha! Hmm Michael Caine as Robin? lol...
The Lambo Reventon appearance might be the first product placement in the Bat franchise.. and they showed you it will survive a side collision as well. Not too shabby for a coupla million eh?
Hey i don't know about you guys but I want a Hot Toys Two-Face 1/6 figure baaaad... and you just know they're gonna do it!
HK:
ReplyDelete"not sure if it is Oscar-worthy but hey, it's DeNiro and Pacino as bad cop/bad cop" = Michael Mann's HEAT lol
"That said, the Bat franchise probably needs one of these guys to make a better sequel than TDK. "
the franchise needs someone new, and since Dawes ain't in the picture no more, beancounters are gonna need to put in a femme.
the established actors are the rock and stone (Bale, Caine, Oldman, Freeman - all males, if you noticed). the newbies (like Ackhart and Ledger) were the "dog-n-pony" frontline show - and hell, they put up a sweet one!
but please dont bring back Ra's, or a ghostly-Joker making Two-Face put a giant coin in the middle of the Batcave LOL
"Hey i don't know about you guys but I want a Hot Toys Two-Face 1/6 figure baaaad... and you just know they're gonna do it!"
C'mon, you know they're gonna do it! ... but then again, who'd want a scarred figure? so it'll have to be two headsculpts: a Dent and a Two-Face, with two changes of clothes, a gun and a coin. Not much props there tho...
But if they release a Joker in a nurse outfit? *faints*
Hahaha! I was just discussing with a friend over the possibility of a HT Nurse Joker, lol. I mean, not much else they can do with Joker, unless *gasp*, HT Joker Open mouth version??? Lol... or battle-damaged Joker. Or Joker with RPG. Or Joker with magic pencil.
ReplyDeleteBtw did anyone else find it strange that Chris Nolan decided to flip the camera when Joker was hanging upside down in his last appearance? It sure looked weird with gravity at the top of the screen. I mean whose POV was that supposed to be? Batman wasn't upside down and Joker's not looking into a mirror!
I'm voting for Mr Freeze to be the headliner villain for the 3rd one, but of course not the Governator taking the role. It's time for Bats to fight some guys with superhuman abilities! Killer Croc or Clayface as the supporting villains would be sweet.
For the femme quotient, maybe Catwoman? It will be almost as tough to top Michelle Pfieffer(man... did i spell it right?)'s Catwoman as Nicholson's Joker, but it will be great to see someone step up. I'm hoping for Harley Quinn though, but it's hard to factor her in without her beloved Mr J!
Man, it's like, almost too easy for Hot Toys to make the Two-Face figure. Just a new HS for their Michael Schofield, n tada! I'd still buy it though, lol. Yeah hopefully it's gonna be alternate heads and not 'buy both figures to complete your Two-face!' pair. I think alot of burnt wallets still remember their progressively complete Robocop releases!
HK:
ReplyDelete"I'm voting for Mr Freeze to be the headliner villain for the 3rd one" = nnnoOOOOOOOOOooooooo!!!!!
i "slap" you Hadrian! LOL - no lah, i think too super-powered than may go down the gutter, and leave crossovers open to characters all around ... altho i wouldn't mind a crossover with Green Arrow from the upcoming Supermax movie (title changed already, i think)
Perhaps to me, Batman was / is about a man pushing his abilities, talents and resources to the limit, to battle crime and whatnot - but still a mortal man. Personally, looking at Batman Begins and TDK - tis about "hope" at the end of the darkened tunnel, but tangible hope, and put him next to Killer Croc or heavens forbid: Bane - may just well push the limits of "realism", IMHO.
Kudos that they could bring about The Joker in the first place, IMHO! without the prerequisite exposition and origin-story, no less lol
"For the femme quotient, maybe Catwoman?"
Im strangely fine with that ... Bruce needs some poon, so Alred can go get some of his own ... :p ... altho having a non-"powered" Talia Al Ghul would be yummy - the Bat in Lurve! LOL
in place of the Bat-symbol on his chest, got two hearts instead lol
"I mean whose POV was that supposed to be?"
i think at that point, Batman/Bruce "understands" Jokers POV - altho he may not condone it, perhaps he understands that thru the madness, there is truth, even as warped as the intent and actions may be, IMHO.
throughout TDK, we see events thru Bruce POV, and how he reacts to them, even tho stories are told from different characters, they all relate to him indirectly or directly in the end, i reckon.
or at least that is my perception and understanding of TDK.
"Man, it's like, almost too easy for Hot Toys to make the Two-Face figure. Just a new HS for their Michael Schofield"
no bro - no scofield! LOL Eckhart has a distinct facial shape that would make for a decent sculpt IMHO - the square jawline and dimple helps define the face ... hell, i was thinking it would work if they did a Pair-Set of Comissioner Gordon and Harvey Dent (Set A) and a single Two-Face with Joker Nurse (Set B) = then we all can die lieow LOL
"I think alot of burnt wallets still remember their progressively complete Robocop releases! "
DUDE! i gots two words for ya: "Terminator Salvation"! ... planning a blogpost about it soon, but am sure folks have been viewing the teaser trailer now
... come to think of it, was suprised HT didnt release Joker with an RPG tho - weapons? they gots plenty! LOL
Eh... why not Mr Freeze leh... he's cool wat, LOL
ReplyDeleteGreen Arrow??? Nnnnnnnoooooooo Padme.... Nnnnnnnnnnoooooooooo!
Crossover hmmm... I would like to see Batman vs Deathnote's L, but like that's ever gonna happen! Imagine Batman pulling out the Deathnote from his utility belt... hmm. DeathBat. Maybe not.
Talia Al Ghul? That will require some time onscreen tying it back to the first movie... and you-killed-my-father-therefore-i'm-here-to-kill-you moments. Maybe Zatanna bah, for a non-powered type. Come to think of it, Catwoman is non-powered yeah. I mean of course for the sake of sanity, everyone should never acknowledge the existence of the Halle Berry Catwoman (extended closeup cat yawn anyone? Nnnnooooooo!). Still, hopefully it's a character that has not made it onscreen before, so hopefully it's either Talia, Zatanna or Harley.
Eh... you think too much into the POV qn liao... haha. I was actually referring to the physical POV of the camera. The Joker was hanging upside down, but when he was speaking, the shot had him rightside up, so gravity was at the top of the screen, which was weird to look at. Remember? No? Nevermind, your philosophical autopsy of it works as well, holy cheemology, tre! =D
I had thought that the 2 detectives (the plump white man and the hispanic female) were Bullock and Montoya, but then they identified the female as a Ramirez. I think the fatty is Bullock though. He had that chewing toothpick look and the hat/coat combi.
Terminator Salvation eh... Stan Winston's demise is such a loss. Hopefully they can continue to produce quality work on the effects. Nothing much from the teaser leh, I guess that's the purpose of teasers eh, haha! Just Bale's mug and a few Hunter/Killers, plus the trademark scene of caterpillar tracks crushing skulls. I got 2 words to return you also... :"Summer Glau!" Hahah... they can keep Salvation lah... I want a 1/6 Terminator SCC Cameron!
Actually this HT Joker v good oredi.. the rest of the weapons can slowly zhng. It's good that they dun put in too many things lah, keep the price down. I mean, as low as HT 1/6 can be anyway, heh...
Man, I would kill for a Nurse!Joker figure...come on WB...fork over those licenses! ;)
ReplyDeleteOK, I've just seen it today (living in France, today was the release date). The only thing that really bothers me is how can the Batpod fit in the Tumbler? Where are the machine guns coming from ?
ReplyDeleteThe performance for the Joker was truely amazing...
great post
