Kathie describes her work as “a satirical look at how fear affects our sense of reality. The characters perform as narrators in lonely worlds that each explores individually, creating his or her own perspective, and thus, own reality. As our hosts, the ensemble provides a sense of comfort, the reminiscent style is soothing, yet the mood is dark. As children, they evoke a sense of temporality; childhood serves as a starting ground, a place where things begin.”

Self-taught artist, Brandt Peters, creates unique character designs, paintings and illustrations that have achieved international recognition and have influenced, across the top -- toy design, animation, music and the 'POP' top marketplace. Hailing from a family of uber 'antique' collectors and artists, his eclectic upbringing was surrounded by deviant cartoon alter egos, folklore and indigenous expression, ancient amusements, archaic playthings, and old timey toys. His aesthetic embodies and contemporizes the wild retro essence of the 'Slap Stick' era with surreal images and characters that balance on the edge of darkness and light and belong in your sweetest nightmares. Brandt is currently preparing for the apocalypse in New Mexico with Olivas and their two dogs, Bailey and Diego.

Brandt describes the subject of his work as “a world of side-show icons, deviant Animalia, and ‘masked’ glorified cartoon alter egos. I utilize these icons and character cultures as antithetical counterparts to what we are lead to believe as being innocent and socially acceptable. Although misfits on the surface, a sense of relation is understood, secret from the public - we are all misfits; hiding behind animated personas, odd and beautifully unusual.”

Kathie Olivas’ and Brandt Peters’ 2-person show, “LIVING INBETWEEN WORLDS” at Gallery 1988:LA unveils the most involved and immersed collaborative body of work in the 10 years they have been exhibiting together. The premise of this show was not only to mesh their own unique expression and viewpoints together, but to celebrate and examine the very core of that topic through the worlds and characters they are known for. On the rare occasion that worlds collide, a gateway opens… the “dreamland” revealed, a new mythos gives way the birth of unfathomable apparitions, deviant misfits and mutant cherubs all competing for attention and space. Is their world really an exaggeration? Or is it the mirror to our own performance we know so well?

Rooted in Children’s toys and folklore – the new body of work is a parade and tour de visual force featuring mutant toys, odd and unusual sculptures as well as new paintings on canvas, wood and found objects. Peters’ and Olivas’ will also be pre-releasing an exclusive print and toy release through their fine art limited editions company - CIRCUS POSTERUS to commemorate this event.
