Seen@STGCC 2010: Play Imaginative
WHAT: Many weeks ago in December 2010 this Saturday, I ventured out of the hospital for a single day to cruise along the con-aisles of the Singapore Toy Games and Comic Convention in Suntec City. This was what I witnessed from my trusty wheelchair…
WHO: One of the key toy-players of STGCC was local toy-makers Play Imaginative (whom folks remember to be the event organizers for STGCC 2008-09), who provided a swell showcase of both art toys and commercial branded-toys, as well as a 360-all-round sales-booth with stock enticingly stacked up in the middle. And they had a slew of event-exclusives and releases too. While much time has passed since these images were snapped, perhaps this will serve as a harbinger of toys to come, especially Joe Ledbetter's ZODIAC series, and upcoming 10" Trexis with articulated legs. As well were the distinct presence of home-grown Project Singa - CLICK THRU for peeps!
Local LEGO-artist Nicholas Foo of BlackBulb Creations was on hand with his limited edition DR x BB TO-FU [okan] collaboration with DEVILROBOTS - available only for commissions. Check out more product pics on BlackBulb.
Duo color-editions of BOSS BURGER TREXIs in 10" from regular-design contributor Tokidoki - in "Red" and "Purple". Both were available at the event, each with their own tin cans (for display boxes). Not one of my favs (at the least) but seems fans might feel differently?
We've previously broke the news about the "Black" COPPERHEAD TREXI, but the White Edition was a surprise. Courtesy of Hong Kong designer and yet another regular-contributor Kenny Wong. Would be exceptional if some of the mechanical-parts were electroplated chrome tho - to match Kenny's 1/6-Copperhead figure releases from Hot Toys - but yes, that's just me ;p
More of Joe Ledbetter's Chinese ZODIAC Series HERE. One of "Best Of Show", IMHO.
Oddles of DEVILROBOTS products were on display, which was absolutely fair as they were one of the key Invited Artists (along with Mori Chack with his Gloomy Bear). On show were a slew of tofu-ness, from 1.2 inch HOROSTO-FU to Mini PLAY TOFUS and 4" vinyl figurines (peep that bloody-pink Gloomy-Bear crossover below).
What was absolutely surprising, was the announcement of their CARE BEARS license - hardly "art toy" at any measure, but no doubt a brand familiar to Singaporeans, to be had, perhaps? I have a feeling, if there are any doubts, they should be put into print and considered for Play Imaginative's relaunch of their publication PLAY TIMES, innit? Heh.
