Happy Winter Solstice
Amidst the hoopla of the Mayan 'End of the World'-hype, I hope folks have not forgotten Winter Solstice - which happens to fall also on December 21st this year - which sees the shortening of a single day and lengthening of night, and whereby "most Northern Hemisphere cultures have held a recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time." via).
The only way we celebrate this in the Heng Household, is having "tang yuan" (glutinous rice balls with either red bean paste, ground peanuts and black sesame paste inside) swimming in a bowl of sweetened soup. And although I have since been on insulin injections for my deteriorating diabetes condition, I pop in a tad of "Equal" faux sugar for taste, and hence not needing to miss the comfort of a warm bowl of soup, and a slice of Chinese "tradition" :)
Have A Sweet and Happy Winter Solstice, folks!
