Winston Leong's TOP TEN TOYS OF 2020
As we jump into "2021", let's take a loving lookback at TOYS FROM 2020, with this TOP TEN TOYS OF 2020-List from Winston Leong (Insta @winzleong), who continues to collect goodies that I drool over! And Welcome Back To Singapore!
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#10):
Headlock Studio / Superman Toys 28th Anniversary / Diabolo
WINSTON: A great leaving HK figure that i was lucky enough to be chosen to purchase. Also a good remembrance of Superman Toys which i will only get to visit again when I go back to HK (Hopefully Soon!).
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#9): FWEN by Joan Cornella / All Rights Reserved!
WINSTON: My first Joan piece! I love how it magnetically attaches back, adding to the quirk and giving you more options to display the piece. Also love the detail in the broken leg showing the bone when you take the leg apart.
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#8): Moonflower by Yoskay Yamamoto
WINSTON: A great example of how a painting is converted to 3D. Beautiful.
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#7):
Just A Girl (Various Editions) from 222Kawaii / Aragon
WINSTON: This first caught my attention in TTF 2019 but due to the very limited quantities, I was unable to purchase. The sculpt is amazing and the paint job is great too! I love the scale of it and it is a piece that I can easily carry around to take photos of!
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#6): Mr Fried Chunky by Jim Dreams
WINSTON: One of my favourite iterations of Chunk which totally matches the character!
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#5):
Siu Ming, The Reader: Various Editions by Kila Cheung / How2Work
WINSTON: Love the sculpt and how it emulates the irregularities of clay. Also, the hand painted text on the tee is such a great selling point!
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#4):
Kasing Lung / Acid Rain / How2Work / Astronaut
WINSTON: Not my first Kasing Astronaut piece but definitely my fave in terms of the paint work and the weathering effect!
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#3): Gummi Girl by Yoshitomo Nara!
WINSTON: One of my grail pieces that I have been trying to get whenever I go to Tokyo. This year, I finally managed to get them all online and brand new with yummy gummys included! (excluding the GID which i am still searching for).
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#2): Restore / Neo Japan Super Damaged Version!
WINSTON: Another one of my staples (If i can even get 'em at all), this particular piece is really a gem with the complicated and detailed new head sculpt and the paintwork! To die for!"
TOY OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 (#1)
WINSTON: Gonna play cheat a little as there are too many things i love and consolidate the Coarse pieces I got this year as my TOP FAVE! A staple on my yearly top 10s, the pieces this year are not only great in concept but are pieces of art in their own rights. And those colours schemes.... Love!
And while I've done a Q&A with Winston in last year's TOP TEN (*Do have a read), I'd asked something new this year: Has your collecting preference changed during this year? If so what are they? And why the change?
"I think the only major difference in my toy collecting the past year has been my attitude towards not being able to get certain pieces I love. I no longer feel grudge or get angry as toy collecting should be about having fun.
There are more and more collectors joining the community making it a lot more difficult to get toys. It is a great thing to have more people enjoying what I have been doing for years but somehow I would have loved for it to have been kept as a niche.
Right now it feels more like a buy and sell market versus a community.
Collecting preference hasn't changed but a lot of it depends on whether you are even able to get the figures at all (what with the ballots and draws and queueing, etc).
So I am just glad to be able to get what I have gotten so far.
Coming back to Singapore would probably affect my buying as there are less avenues to getting the toys. I also definitely miss hanging out with my toy friends in HK over dinner or going to queue for toys." (Insta @winzleong)
