world outside my window part seven

the thing that struck me most about the (live telecast) election results on the night before (6th/7th morning), was less of the inevitable results (altho a tad surprising in statistics) was what Worker's Party Sylvia Lim had said at the podium, in front of WP-supporters, after they had found out their party had lost to PAP was:

"We would like to congratulate the PAP on their win ..." (words based on my feeble memory and cannot be confirmed) ~ which was promptly followed by a "C'mon!" (with a smile) - in response to the crowds muted boos ...

regardless if it's the truth or a politically-correct gesture, Sylvia Lim's seemingly "gentlemanly" (no less from a lady) act during the recently completed elections, garnered appreciation and new-found respect from me, for in this day and modern-times, it has become sucha rarity that we often take it's presensce for granted, IMHO.

becoz i'd like to think (naively even) that at the end of the day, regardless of the "varying and veiled truth and lies", of the dirty "politiking" (spl) and what-nots - at the end of the blardy day, there are folks out there who geniunely WANTS to help, who WANTS to do good by the nation and her peoples - and not (just) becoz of the cool mil-pay packet or of constantly reacting to their own ego's being hurt or trampled on (for sake of politics, mind),

becoz, c'mon folks, in this little island of singapore - how fragmented can we afford to be?

regardless of political-parties, regardless of differences and ideals - can we really afford NOT to stand together? can we afford to HATE each other? can't we farking work TOGETHER to achieve what we all want and feel deserve? becoz t'would indeed be a sad sad day when the need for politics to rule our future, rather than the need to help each other survive and achieve what one man, or a lone party, are able to achieve.

"am i that naive?" - i ask myself ... i KNOW i CANNOT afford to be, but if "naivety" meant "hope"? then i raise my right hand in "guilt" and put it on my heart's chest and i laugh a little at this thought and memory:

"We, the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one united people, regardless of race, language or religion,to build a democratic societybased on justice and equalityso as to achieve happiness, prosperity andprogress for our nation." [via]

and then i laugh no more, for maybe they'd have included this instead:
"reagrdless of race, language, religion or political party"

i look out of the window and see the school where we had gone to vote on election day and now that same school is filled with primary school kids having their PE session and i wonder if they had known what the school was used for, a day prior? and i wonder how the kids would relate to how the nation is going to be, in their very near future ...

and the hand upon my chest becomes a fist and it clenches hard, for our nation's future sakes.
