it was not captain america's shield behind iron man on stark's worktable

UPDATE 23.05.08: i have been pwned. why? well according to Dark Horizon's interview with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige (with regards to the Shield) - he "did confirm the object glimpsed in Tony Stark's workshop in "Iron Man" is part of the character's shield."

it sucks to be pwned ... actually, it doesn't, becoz i had nothing to loose (except my personal value of opinion and judgement, maybe?) BAH... nah, im just playing the victim here :p (cheers for the headsup, TSR!)

the benefits of watching IRON MAN the second time around, was that I knew WHEN to expect and lookout for the particular scene where the previous featured reports of Captain America's SHIELD were noticed on-screen - which was noticeably absent from the earlier trailer (and suspected to have been added-in laters - unconfirmed rumor).

The sequence in question starts when Pepper Potts walks downstairs to Stark's basement to find his in his Mark-3 armor, being removed by servitoids. The single un-edited scene was a moving panning-shot, approximately less than 5-seconds' worth, before it cuts to the POV of Pepper Potts. After that, you'd not see the table-top again. (Drats)

This is my own interpretation of what was seen on the work-table behind Tony Stark = It was not specifically a single tangible 3-dimensional shield - per se. ... CLICKETH FOR DETAILS

SHIELD

Made of different 3-dimensional pieces - of differing thickness and materials (hence surface reflections on the main/central "black"-body) - placed and layered on top of each other, on the table, to form a collage of what looked like the shield in question. Most noticeable to me was the 3-pointed STAR-like shape ("arguably" so - for the sake of visual recognition) - missing 2-bottom points (to complete the "star").

Again, tis of my own interpretation and recollection (one day old memory LOL) - make of it as you will, I'm just here to share - and of course YOU may have you're own opinion on this.

ADDED 20.05: Video Evidence!

and another one:

"Original" trailer (for reference) premiered Feb 28th - during airing of LOST:

(sequence early 3/4-in of trailer)

Regardless, one definite thing for me, was that the second viewing was still as awesome a ride, if not better - becoz I knew what not to miss! LOL - and the (Credits) End Sequence was just as sweet - along with a coupla hoots from a buncha fans in the cinemas with us, and that is cool enough for me :)

  1. I dunno... I read somewhere that in Ultimates, Stark was a collector of esoteric memorabilia, stuff like Cap's shield...

If he did come across one of Cap's shields, I think he would indeed buy it—if not as a piece of a collection, then certainly to try to reverse-engineer/study it and find out what exactly made it so indestructible.

I don't read the Ultimate stuff, so I can't say for sure. But I do think it's plausible that it is in fact supposed to be Cap's shield.

  2. fair points, "anonymous" ... if the filmmakers decide to ixnay Cap's WW2 non-circular shield, then this'll be sound ... altho how complex would the shiled be, for ony to take it apart? ... i reckon this is for the filmmakers to work out and pacify us, innit? LOL

i dare not claim to know for fact if it was Marvel's intention for the image to be an easter-egg or tease for fans, but i really don't think it's an actual shield per se - especially if it belonged to Cap prior to deep-freeze?

but again, i dare not claim to be 100% sure :p

darnnit! i forgot to look out for Thor's hammer if it was in the terrorists' cave! kekekeke

  3. Captain America's shield is made from several pieces of metal. maybe stark is rebuilding the shield BUT, he has not flattened out the individual layers yet. much like how a SAMURAI SWORD starts off as a big giant BLOCK of steel, that gets FLATTENED into the final sword. maybe stark has not flattened out the shield yet. i think the shield is the only thing on earth that combined both ADAMANTIUM and VIBRANIUM. so maybe the top layer is adamantium, the bottom layer vibranium. and later on, stark smacks them together to make the famous shield.

  4. Of course in Marvel's "normal" universe, ie. not Ultimate, Cap's vibranium alloy shield was created by an accident that noone has ever been able to replicate... hehe, I think I just really WANT it to be Cap's shield sitting there. :P

  5. "I think I just really WANT it to be Cap's shield sitting there" - nah dude, i think it's totally cool, and neither am i against the notion! - hell, instead of having a web-convo with "anonymous", i shall hereforth dub thee "Cap-Fan"! (unless you tell me otherwise ;p)

on the side: i just re-read Mark Waid x Alex Ross' KINGDOM COME and realized (and recognized) in one of the panels, "Norman" (the Pastor) was looking into a shopfront window and in it was a book "Under The Hood" by "Holis Manson" - which ties into Watchmen! and i think that was a wonderful example of a "crossover" done on the cheek, IMHO :)
