some more eric so wip 1/6-sculpts for 2008 exhibition

more sculpts peeped on Eric So's blog [since my last post] makes me wish he would produce more "realistic" 1/6th-figures ("licensing" of celeb-likeness notwithstanding, of coz) rather than caricatures of Chow or Jay - as cool as they were (except Jay-Z - *shudder*) - far be it that I could afford them. but hell, having a chance to look at them (even online) is actually pretty darn exciting already (sad bugger am I, I know LOL) ... man, I still remember the first time I saw his Bald Chow Yun Fatt online = *swoon* :p

  1. Yeah that Jay-Z figure was borderline "coonish". It was horrible from the jewelry down to the sculpt. Why don't more companies take advantage of the hip hop market? There is a place for the same level of detail that they reserve for movie figures. There is no one doing a great job except for Mezco. and even then the Biggie figure was the best attempt so far. The Flavor Flav figure was dope but the Chuck D figure was boring and did not feature his true likeness. Ghostface Killah (from Wu-Tang) had a doll produced in his like ness but it had poor articulation and they were selling for $500 just because the jewelry accessories were real 14k gold and it could speak phrases. No way is that worth it. When I look at the quality of Hot Toys, Enterbay, amd Medicom, that is the standard that I think they should be shooting for.

  2. agreed.

besides licensing-deals, peeps could consider either an entirely high-end product (personally i thot the GhostfaceKilla figure had the right idea+direction - but like you mentioned, less than satisfactory execution) or mass-market, which Mezco is fulfilling - but perhaps not reaching out to the right market perhaps? (strained assumptions on my end)

as a figure alone, they may not appeal as much (at this stage of acceptance) but buddled together with something else? "toy / product - education" or even "immersion" could be the key - hell, them ain't just plastic man-dollies, yo! = they are a "lifestyle"! LOL
