Event: Iced Out by Scott Hove @ La Luz de Jesus Gallery (April2-25)
What's happening lately in the Heng household, is the spirit of "baking", with dad and sis taking up the culinary activity vis-à-vis baking classes ~ whereas I, on the other hand, have zero aptitude in the making-of, but is definitely apt in the devouring-of (heh) ... but I loves me sum cake, anytime anywhere (except "mint" cakes, I do not like tasting "toothpaste"...).
Then when I saw the above images for Scott Hove's cake art, for his April 2nd launch of his solo show "ICED OUT", I saw not only a vision of baked-awe (complete with sharpened teeth and horned pasties displayed on the wall like hunting trophies), but of "providence" (which basically means I'm going to try and score myself a cake laters, because I am shallow like that ;p). PRESS-RELEASE: "Iced Out" is a celebration of the artificial, acknowledging our tendency to embrace illusion in order to feel safe and receive emotional gratification. The fake cake sculptures, with their display of beauty and potential for satisfaction, lure the viewer into a sense of anticipation. They also contain elements, not immediately seen, that create a sense of anxiety and fear. This in turn creates a visual and emotional resonance that is intended to represent what we all have to deal with in our lives every day...the hunt for satisfaction and the anxiety that we won't get it.
Scott Hove's works encompasses a broad variety of media, from sculptural installations to painting. The cakes are formed using carvable polyurethane foam and plywood. They are frosted with a variety of acrylic media and accessorized with fake fruit and other objects found in stores or on the street. The materials and techniques borrow from traditional and decorative arts and craft to render the oftentimes jarring objects and fantasy installations.
All American Softy and treats by The Nickel pastry chef Sharlena Fong will be available at Scott Hove's "Iced Out" exhibition opening at the newly expanded La Luz de Jesus Gallery.
All American Softy was started by Mike Munsantry, a former NY Police officer -- who after being on duty during the tragedy at the September 11 World Trade Center and over a year afterward at Ground Zero during clean-up -- packed up, moved west and started a "Mister Softee" style ice cream truck. All American Softy serves up soft serve ice cream cones dipped in chocolate with sprinkles, root beet floats and slushies, hot pretzels and hot drinks like espresso, tea and hot chocolate. Frank Sinatra and other smooth lounge sounds gently flow from the speakers of the spotless stainless steel All American Softy truck.
Sharlena Fong is the pastry chef at downtown L.A.'s Nickel Diner. The classically trained chef has worked in the kitchens of Danny Meyer, Thomas Keller and Joachim Splichal, and now makes her name with a menu comfort desserts such as Pop-Tarts with homemade jam, Ding Dongs with vanilla buttercream and other entirely decadent and delicious treats.
Fong's pastries and All American Softy will sweeten up this fabulous opening AND celebrate of the expansion of La Luz de Jesus Gallery!
