Movies @ San Diego Comic Con 2011
In the NY Times web-report "Movie Studios Reassess Comic-Con" - they mention who will be coming to San Diego Comic Con, and who will not, as well the plain simple economic reasons "why". And while a huge part of me wonders why the heck even movie-studios with non-geek movies would ever be present at a comic-convention, another part of me finds it fascinating that geek-movies finally have a place to be showcased!
Those who are making a miss this year are Warner Brothers, Disney, Dreamworks and The Weinstein Company. "On the fence" are Con-staple Marvel Entertainment (which is extremely surprising, but who knows until the schedule is fully revealed, or when one enters the Convention-doors?).
Those who are presenting their wares will be; Universal with “Cowboys & Aliens”, Paramount has “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” (with a possible appearance by its director, Steven Spielberg). Twentieth Century Fox might come with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, and Sony will most probably tout their “The Amazing Spider-Man” (Yes, there is now a hypen).
I am not fully convinced Marvel might not attend, as they have been mentioned to be debuting Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (the sequel to 2007's "Ghost Rider" - yes, Nicolas Cage will be back as "Johnny Blaze") and perhaps ramp up or a last-push with promos for "Captain America: The First Avenger" (which premieres in cinemas July 22nd). I have no doubt they will also tout their “The Amazing Spiderman” with Sony. The start of the promos for "The Avengers" have been "done and dusted" with their panel and unveiling at last year's SDCC, so they need a new blockbuster to anchor their appearance this year, IMHO. Would the new Spidey be the one to do it? Or perhaps Spidey's "villain"?
Also expect Relativity Media with “Immortals”, “The Raven” and “Shark Night 3-D.” Lionsgate will also be back (post-"The Expendables"), and Summit Entertainment "will stage a panel for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.”
And while these titles mean little to the geek-crowd, I am personally keen on Tarsem's Immortals, having made a splash with their appearance at WonderCon not too long ago. C'mon, at most we/I am gagging for trailer-debuts and "leaks" more than anything else.
NYTimes also reported: "The industry has also realized that Comic-Con’s timing, in late July, is actually friendlier to TV shows, which are getting revved up for fall debuts." - so do expect a slew of American TV Shows pounding the con-floor.
All this kinda bittersweet, as I'd imagine "movie panels" would be where I would be hanging out more, if ever I step my foot into SDCC, especially since movie properties have taken up a chunk of publicity for what used to be a geek-fest of comicbook and cosplayers. Or simply because there are not enough geek-films to make a splash with at SDCC, in the first place?
I wonder what regular convention-attendees have to say about this?
Who I would love to see being represented at SDCC this year? First on the list: DREDD, followed swiftly by Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Real Steel - all of whom are decidedly "geek"-films - based on a comicbook-anti-hero, a revitalized classic cartoon and toy-license and giant boxing robots! And of course all three have toys coming out or adapted about them before!
And maybe even Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadow, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and Footloose (okay, so maybe the last one was thrown in to test if you're reading this far - bless you if you did). Can't think of anything else - heck, this is not a movie-blog you're reading here, ya know? LOL
