1/6th Scaled Hobby - Seen @ STGCC 2011

The 1/6th-scaled hobby is alive and thriving in Singapore. A variety of regular retailers helmed their own booths for this year's Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention [www / Tagged] - from Yellow Box Trade, to U-Toys, to The Falcon's Hangar to Crazy Toyz, showcasing genres ranging from predominantly military-based (which includes the convention-exclusive release from Soldier Story courtesy of U-Toys), to modern movie-based characters (widest recognition to folks here, no doubt due to media outlets), to offerings from 3A Toys. All these on top of Hot Toys' pavilion.

And beyond boxed figures, there were accessories, headsculpts, kitbashes and even customs. Heck, I even 'relived' my sordid toy-collecting past with a boxed 21st Century figure! (Okay fine, I bought two boxes muahahahaha) And while I haven't exactly been knee-deep in the hobby for a while, it is heartening to see the hobby mature beyond simply military and encompassing more genres (in part thanks to HT as well), so that we could even see Bruce Lees and even Sammo Hung being in the mix!

Personally, I would love to see more representation on the 'urban streetwear' side of things, but alas that too is a very niche market, along with the 90s' heyday of designer 12" figures from folks like Jason Siu, Paul Leung and other Hong Kong based designers - which is still vibrant and alive in events like Taipei Toy Festival - which I still hope to see in the Singapore scene.

I reckon it is less of "what new thing can I buy?" versus the sheer representation of the hobby at the Con. For sure folks will lament being able to score these at local flea markets and retail shops - but what is the alternative? Is anyone "brave" enough out there to showcase a predominant 'urban style' series of 1/6th-scale figures?
