SKULLHEAD SAMURAI Custom Art Show 2017
Since it’s prototype reveal at STGCC2015, and subsequent release a year later at STGCC2016, the toy-journey for SKULLHEAD SAMURAI continues this new year with a group custom art show, featuring interpretations by 30 participating international artists on the 9-inch tall vinyl collectible, resulting in a gathering of katana wielding warriors which held court in a gallery exhibition hosted by FLABSLAB, from March 24th thru to April 7th, 2017.
Scroll thru to take a closer look at the customs - as seen in the recap video featured above - or check out MORE images since uploaded HERE on Facebook, and feel free to head on over to skullheadsamuraishow.com to see of there are any customs to be had, which as of my last visit, 90% of which had already been spoken for!
Curated by Jake Lee of Pobber Toys, this show is the 2nd group customs show exhibiting at FLABSLAB (first being 2016’s ”Roadkill: Safe Passage”, also curated by Jake).
The SKULLHEAD SAMURAI is created by Jon-Paul Kaiser (the body) and Huck Gee (the skull-face), and produced in vinyl by Pobber Toys.
What gave me a real buzz was the involvement of one of it’s creators in a collaborative story+custom set (seen above / first featured here) - accomplished with J*RYU - which in turn was a somewhat introductory gateway into their ”Dauntless” show at Woot Belly, with their (what I call) “sunshine noir” aesthetics, and a strong emphasis on visually descriptive “story-telling”.
Alas Huck Gee was unable to participate, and I could only but imagine the awesomeness missed! Hey, I am “toy-greedy”, okay? I might not be able to afford any of these, but it would be uber-epic if I could see a Huck-Gee-custom piece in person, yeah? :)
To complement the exhibition, Pobber had as well offered the DIY Blank White version of the Skullhead Samurai vinyl, for budding customisers and toy-collectors to own! Jake from Pobber had mentioned that quantity was very limited, and listing online for sales might not necessarily be in the cards! Folks heading to the coming Thailand Toy Expo - where Pobber will next be at - "might" stand a better chance of scoring one, IF they don't get sold out at the exhibition first!
On hand was also a new Skullhead Samurai enamel pin, featuring Gold on Black, and a must have for collectors, methinks! Now THIS can be had online here for US$13 each.
