The Toy-Journey of Grandma Ojiko & Grandpa Yama-Sento by Nihombashi19
Thailand-based creator Sathit Leelapanyachon shares with us his journey (or rather the "8-Year Journey of Grandma Ojiko & Grandpa Yama-Sento") for a figure that snagged my attention at the recent Pop Toy Show Singapore, for which I bugged him for his sample display piece to bring home with me...!
From Epoxy to Sofubi – The 8-Year Journey of Grandma Ojiko & Grandpa Yama-Sento:
A Toy Story That Began with a Chance Encounter (2016–2017) Sometimes the most memorable toys begin with the smallest sparks. In 2016, at a tiny Japanese Second Hand shop, the idea for Grandma Ojiko was born. By 2017, she stepped into the world as a handmade epoxy sculpture — a quirky, elderly figure unlike anything else. Soon after came Grandpa Yama-Sento, her calm, mountain-like companion. Together, they became a reflection of everyday humor, timelessness, and quiet strength.
Handmade Heart, Resin Reality (2017–2023):
Ojiko and Yama-Sento first lived as one-off handmade pieces, slowly evolving into resin toys. Resin molds meant more collectors could finally hold them, yet every piece retained the hand-painted touch of the artist. Even better, their story was chronicled through illustrated comics — charming panels showing the behind-the-scenes journey from the very first sculpt to the characters’ growing personalities. It’s rare to see a toy documented with such heartfelt detail.
The Big Leap into Sofubi (2025):
Fast forward to 2025, and the dream becomes reality: Grandma Ojiko finally takes on her Sofubi form — soft vinyl, vibrant colors, and classic Japanese toy craftsmanship. Alongside her comes a full lineup: plush keychains, postcards, and art prints. It’s clear that Ojiko and Yama-Sento aren’t just toys anymore; they’re a playful little universe you can step into.
Design & Details for Collectors:
Holding these figures feels like holding a piece of the artist’s journey. Grandma Ojiko’s pink polka-dot kimono and Grandpa Yama-Sento’s sumo-inspired look are faithful to their origins. The paintwork is clean yet still retains a hand-finished charm. Produced in limited quantities, each Sofubi piece feels like a mini collectible art sculpture rather than just another toy.
