Saltnpaper @ Jakarta 7th Toys & Comics Fair 2011

For his recent appearance at the pat weekend's Jakarta 7th Toys & Comics Fair 2011, Indonesia-based artist Johanes Djauhari aka Saltnpaper drew on OMI, displayed his SolidBoy and generally gave folks at the event a taste of designer toys culture, at the Plastic Culture booth [blogged]. With these images of his appearance at the event posted here, I'd ask him about the snaps, first in particular was the appearance of the SOLIDBOY wooden figure!

JOHANES DJAUHARI: "That piece is an artist proof or maybe prototype(?) for the previous 5 pieces that you saw last time in Jakarta. Now all 5 are sold so I could only bring that prototype piece for the event. I'm in the middle of making another 10 wooden Solidboy, the theme for this 10 is not as traditional as the previous 5 though. Still haven't figure out the carving pattern, I only know that I want it to be 50% traditional + 50% urban."

JOHANES DJAUHARI: "Another plan is to release the resin figure for the DIY Solidboy version before the solo exhibition. Oh speaking of it, PC is kind enough to give me time slot for Solidboy solo exhibition in mid-year. I can't confirm much now as the small details are still under discussion. So many things to create so little time (>.<)"

On how the feedback for "designer toys" was for this year's Toy Fair, Johanes added: "The feedback from folks is quite good, a lot of people are curious about DIY OMI but the market is still need to be educated about designer / DIY toy. Kids in particular are actually whining to their parents to get designer toys but of course the non-collector parent ran away when they looked the price tag hahaha... I have a feeling in years to come, we will be seeing significantly lot more designer toys coming from Indonesia."
