captain america comics

The Red Skull has been assassinated. the Cosmic Cube is in the hands of a corporation, that which was borne of old Russia. Crossbones kidnaps the Red Skull's daughter. and the long-thought-dead Bucky is back. or is he?

Marvel Comic's Captain America is a slowburn. but the stories and subplots are so thick, they choke at your subconscious and leaves you wanting more. such is the skill and storytelling-mastery of Ed Brubaker.

fueled by the subdued realism in Steve Epting's (penciler and inks) and Mike Perkins (inks) storytelling/artwork, infused with excellent an uber-heavy moody colorscape by Frank D'Armata - conjures up an intense read and adventure; that is Captain America.

having just pickedup the entire (current) series (#1-13), it had made me a convert. and i await Cap's trials and inner demons to surface, as well as the fate of the Winter Soldier. I've never been much of a Cap-fan, most times a 2-dimensional representation of "the american spirit/dream" (IMHO) ... and "humanizing" a comic-book character is a tricky-task, at most surrounding him with adversities and adversaries and see how the dude/dudette works his/her way thru it all and emerge a better person, if not a "hero" ... more so a costume-with-a-man-within, rather than the man-wearing-the-suit ... and Brubaker has (personally for me) made Captain America more than just a costumed avenger wearing the nation's flag ... a broken and flawed man makes for an interesting read, i reckon (IMHO) and it works for me.

do try to pickup the series, if not the trade-paperback (not on the shelves yet, i'm afraid - heck! i couldn't wait! :p), for the deftly crafted stories indeed warrants a decent read and respect. *highly recommended*
