riding high at Number 2 on the Toysrevil's Top 6 Vinyl Toys of 2006-countdown chart is Tokidoki's Cactus Friends-vinyl quartet!
first time i saw Sandy, Bastardino, Sabochan and Polpettina online, i thought they were too cute to be true and when i held them in my hands (see the pattern emerging? :p) i fell in vinyl-lurve ~ *sigh* ~ lemme put it this way, istarved struggled for 2 weeks a week or so after i splurged on them (so what else is new on thy financial-front, eh? BAH)
personally, i feel Simone Legno had captured the essence of the current Japanese cuteness-cool-generation that has captured the imagination all over the globe, encapsulated in a supersquished body, doused with a heavy dose of character design and vibrant colors (which suited them to a T), and imbued with a slight tinge of naughtiness and nastiness (which incidentally made me forget the time i got pricked by a baby cactus *ouch* hahahaha)
and with little details like the star on Sandy's head and bone-"clip" on Polpettina - i find myself gushing like a wee laddie, bringing out the childhood-wonder of discovery a toy, that which the Cactus Friends has done for me, IMHO (altho needless to say, tis not a pretty sight to see a grownassman gush, yeh?) in short: alone they are cute by themselves, but as an entire group? irresistible! *GUUUUSSSSHHH*
besides the gripe of the display boxes falling apart, literally (not enuff glue, innit?), i haveta admit, t'was the design which more than made up for it's slightly less than stellar make, both in paintwork and finishing, IMHO. altho imagine if they were double their sizes, mayhap they wouldn't have been that cute? (*heh*). released by StrangeCo, this set will be the pride of any vinyl-consumer/collector who like/loves/adores the signature Tokidoki-style, IMHO - i know it does mine :)
