MaxToyCo-Monday: Toy Review of Captain Maxx by Mark Nagata x Max Toy Co
TOY-STORY: Captain Maxx Grey Suit new version soft vinyl stands 9.75 inches tall, and comes with a removable mask, jointed arms, waist and legs. Priced at US$45 per (sans shipping) via www.maxtoyco.com - the website listing mentions it as; "Perfectly replicated from the only known vintage figure, Max Toy Co. presents Captain Maxx".
Check out the genesis of Captain Maxx the character and toy via www.captainmaxx.com. Gotta lov a toy with a 'history'!
Captain Maxx comes bagged with header-card and as well an extremely thick card back, which I had initially thought was an acrylic-sheet! Both header card and card back provided for much illustrations and information to be provided, which was pretty much appreciated. The cut-thru-anatomy drawing by designer Mark Nagata was as well a truly inspired touch.
Captain Maxx Articulation Demo Video:
Captain Maxx is a fully-articulated figure featuring 5 basic points at the neck, both arms and legs at torso. The 6th "articulation" is in fact the removable mask revealing the 'human' beneath - with a much smaller head compared to the body! And while normally I might give task to such an aesthetics, it in turn seems 'charming', and becomes a natural aspect of this figurine depiction, IMHO.
The marking on the figure's leg shows that it is a "Made In China" product, and the headsculpt looks exactly like it! Love it! hahahaha
The thing about Captain Maxx which draws me in, is that it looks really like an old-skool kaiju superhero toy - ala Ultraman (which this is paying homage to) - and something I see more often in bootlegged MIC-toys ("Made-In-China") moreso that kaiju-themed toys where I grew up (I was toy-deprived of this genre growing up, what can I say?).
"Inspired by my favorite hero, Ultraman comes this newest Captain Maxx figure with grey and red markings." ~adds Mark Nagata.Hey I liked them bootlegs too - because they seemed a warped version of the "originals" (which my twisted-tastes can enjoy) and that puts a smile in my heart muahahahaha
Desirable? Yes - if you are into these sort of toy-aesthetics. This is one of the very few "superhero" characters in the kaiju-toy genre, where most everyone else are "monsters". Captain Maxx sure has his work cut out for him!
Also available is the Brown Gold edition (priced ay US$40 per sans shipping), and the Red Edition (listed as 'Sold Out').
