march and april dunnys
one of Kidrobot's more "successful" self-produced vinyls would be Dunnys, from 3"-ers to 8"-ers, to even whopping 20"-ers - this platform toy has expanded into a mini-empire of exploding candy-colored mini figures that has had both fans raving about them and of the varied artists and designers bring life to the figure (heck i voted it #4 in my Top Ten Vinyls of 2006, innit? *heh*), and at the same token, complaining about the endless recycling of the same platform figure/form currently and to-come!
regardless, this little bunny-eared and chubby creature (co-designed by Kidrobot boss, Paul Budnitz ) shows no sign of slowing down, much less stopping for a breather (*pant*pant*) and this post is a short feature on what's gonna come our way within the next coupla months...
*read more after the jump*
coming this April, Dunny gets "inked" by 12 tattoo artists from across the US, with designs by BJ Betts, Joe Capobianco, Nick Baxter, Civ, Kevin Starai, Eric Newman, Dave Fox, Matt Rinks, Shane O'Neill, Eric Merrill, Grez, and Hannah Aitchison, with some designs limited to 200 pieces worldwide [via]
curated by Kidrobot's Toy Baroness, each USD$6.95 Dunny comes their own mini-gun (!) and a temporary tattoo, and what i reckon would be a first for Kidrobot: "mature content toys"! as staed by the disclaimer: **Please note: Due to the graphic nature of some designs, this series is not appropriate for those under 18 years old.**
a lethal color-combo of Green and Pink makes this 8"-er MIST-designed Dunny pop-out! and it actually looks pretty "yummy" - sorta like sour apple with a hit of rasberry LOL
[via] scheduled for an April-drop @ SRP USD$39.95 and limited to 1,700 pieces worldwide, do look out for the 1-in-6 Black Blind Chase Version!
stressful enough to have blind-boxed 3"-ers, but 8"-ers? LOL
personally (for me) sometimes "simplicity" in design makes for a striking product, and in this case, Flying Fortress' 8"-er hit's the vinyl-spot:
[via] dropping in the month of March, this USD$39.95 Dunny is limited to 1,500 units worldwide ... and my only "regret"? is that i'd painted over his 3"-er counterpart for a personal bash ... and i dun really think i can get back that Dunny now (which so happens to be one of the only two Dunnys i've ever bought :p)
so what happens when "couture" meets "toy"? well, that's what the Colette series of 3"-Dunnys are showing up down the toy-shelf-catwalk, with 11 basic designs from an international pool of graphic artists and fashion designers, which includes Josh Petherick, Craig Robinson, Geoff McFetridge, Mike Mills, Geneviere Gauckler, Kuntzel + Deygas, Work In Progress and Sophie Toporkoff - with 'some' of the designs limited to just 150 pieces worldwide [via]
now, it's always visually (if not "conceptually") interesting (at least for me) when you get non-toy designers/street-artists and involve them in a toy-platform, becoz of the differing genres and design-dynamics .. sometimes it "works", and sometimes ... well, "one man's sustenance is another man's refuse" ...
well, from 3"-couture to an exclusive 8"-er, Kenzo Minami's Dunny is limited to just 380 pieces and is only available to members of the Kidrobot Forumboard [via]:
images shown above are culled from the KR forumboards (which i lurk loads but am not a part of, hence no opportunity to get this sweetie, even if i'd wanted one LOL)
but if "custom" is your poison, then this Huck Gee-custom [via] has just got to be one of my favs in recent memory:
sorta reminds us of ourselves, in ourdaily constant quest for vinyl, innit? *heh*
