decart custom toys by nvc crew
For the upcoming "Monster Art Rally" group customs-show for G1988 SF - NVC Crew had both created a trio of eye-poppin' customs, and at the same time debuted their new "platform" toy concept dubbed DECART ("Deco" x "art toy") - featuring Ozmopod, Isotope and Hypnotoyd (figures measure between 6'' to 11'' tall).
The concept is based on the marriage of painting on canvas and sculpted-parts, with a stretched paintable canvas over a wooden-frame which functions as either the main head or body of whatever the custom's form dictates. The finished product / custom could either be displayed as per regular toys, or hung from a wall, like a painting.

TOYSREVIL: As usual Bao, take us thru from the beginning - How did the toy come about? How did it all start?
DR BAO: So we were invited to participate in this custom show where it's an open platform show (Editor: "Monster Art Rally" for G1988 SF), with no restrictions for the toy platform ... and because of that, it allowed us to show a new toy concept that we're working on for a while now, but were just waiting for a good moment to show it, and I think this is perfect time to present it.
The concept we created is based on one of the most commonly heard complaint that we've had from toy collectors. People often complain that vinyl toys take up a lot of space and people have to find places somewhere in their house where they can put their toys ... and the problem is that when you have a lot of toys - it takes a lot of space, let's say compared to a traditional canvas painting.

DR BAO: One day when I was shopping at my local art supplier for paints and stuff, I came across a canvas that was almost square but with a very thick sides ... and after taking it in my hands and playing with it, I just realized that this could be my answers to these people that both like paintings and toys ...
I realized that I can use these canvases as my main platform where I can paint on it but at the same time, because it is thick enough and have a good wood frame to stretch the canvas, I can sculpt whatever I want and then drill holes in the frame and mount my pieces on the canvas. This way I can then build some really cool characters - all from my cube shape canvas!
And the best thing about this is that people have the choice to put the painting-toy on their shelf, table, etc ... or if they want, they can hang it on the wall, just like a normal painting! So I think it's much more versatile than a normal vinyl toy.....and it looks very cool too!
TOYSREVIL: Always appreciated you folks for considering fan's feedback - and now it's spurred you guys to creation! *coolio*
DR BAO: But the most interesting thing for us in the concept that we invented, is that we can be very creative and it really opens up a lot of new venues of what can be do compare let say to a normal-conventional toy platform. And because we can sculpt whatever we want, we can now create new characters that we can't do with a regular toy platform.
And more than that, we now have a very unique style. And also, it fulfills our desire to push our artistic abilities further than just customizing a blank toy platform, more.

TOYSREVIL: Sweet. How do you think this would appeal to toy customizers?
DR BAO: I think that there's 2 kind of customizers in the world of toy customs. There's people that use the toys as a canvas and only paint on them and then there's people that do some kind of scuplting.
And I think with these "canvas toys customs" that we've just created, we show that we can at the same time sculpt and paint. And more than that, we can now do both at the same time with our cube canvases.
TOYSREVIL: And how did you name your creation?
DR BAO: Because I think our concept is quite unique in the custom world, I decided to give it a name to that style and way of customs that we're the initiator.
So I named it the Decart toys (a kind of mix of Deco art toy...). This will be the name of the style when we will do this kind of customs where we use a canvas combine with original sculpting parts at the same time .
TOYSREVIL: Ever the innovators, Bao! How big are they?
DR BAO: They measure approximately from 6'' to 11'' height.
TOYSREVIL: Aces. Ya gotta give us the low-down for the individual characters soon, yeh? As well as letting folks know if and when they will be available! Keep rocking it, NVC Crew!
