love (1972)! vinyl toy by abc-express
Collectors who scope-out Ebay on a regular basis would be familiar with power-seller; ABC-Express - heck, in a full-circle-ish poetic-way, I remember purchasing from them near a decade ago! (T'was a Punk Rock Cowboy figure set designed by Elphonso Lam). And now they have announced the launch of their very own vinyl toy named LOVE (1972)!
LOVE (1972) stands 10-inches tall, and is designed like a bobble-head toy; with a rockable waist instead! Leong Au from ABC-Express designed and developed this concept with HK artist Elphonso Lam (toldja it was "poetic", innit?)
As a fan of The Cultural Revolution, especially the red tone of their propaganda posters (which were Leong's favs) - Leong had hoped to make a version of this for this period, and had the initial concept of producing a set of "Gang Of Four"-themed toys, but he felt they may not possess much characteristics. The collaboration with Elphonso led to the final design we see here, which is based on the Chinese RED GUARD, with the theme being LOVE and PEACE - Rocking a very propaganda-retro porcelain-ware-vibe = *cool*
Leong also mentions that this Chinese Red Guard "is mixed with some western message which (hopes will make it) funny. This art toy is for all of the 70's people!" - peep the "Rock-On" hand-sign LOL ... I wonder what's written in the "Little Red Book" tho (would be cool if it was a laptop tho :p)
LOVE (1972) comes in two colorways, NORMAL (Colored) and VINTAGE (distressed-Marble) Versions - in a total of 500-pcs produced. "Auspiciously" priced at US$88.88 - each figure comes with a unique number, and will be made available online @ http://www.abcexpresstoys.com around the mid of September 2008.
