Marshall Mashumaro by 64 Colors (A Squibbles Ink x Rotofugi Project)
"Marshall Mashumaro is made of marshmallow.
Marshall Mashumaro is soft and squishy.
Marshall Mashumaro's dog's name is Gumdrop."
MARSHALL Series 1 is a new art toy project produced by a collaboration between Chicago-based product development specialists Squibbles Ink, designer toy store Rotofugi and Michigan-based artists 64 Colors. Marshall also has a dedicated website @ marshalltoys.com filled with WIP-pics, travelling-pics (*giggle*) and the origins of the toy's conception.
Standing approximately 3.5 inches (9cm) tall and are made of rotocast vinyl - Series 1 will feature 19 different Marshall designs (including the 3 secret chases) - with a few shown above for good measure (the hurling-Marsh cracked me up sumthin' fierce - yes I am evil). There will be a special first ever release of VINTAGE MARSHALL (shown-left) at this coming weekend's Wondercon 2009 in San Francisco (Feb 27 - Mar 1) - hit up Booth #1135 and get yourselves sum Marshall-lurve! (Tell 'em TRE sent ya!).
Meanwhile, CLICK THRU for more Marshall Mashumaro :)
TRE bugged Marshall-creator Eric of 64 Colors for a wee-round of Q&A, and seeing this nekkid wee laddie with the generous smile, I had to start off with this question (reads stoopid of me, but whatever ;p):
TOYSREVIL: Is Marshall A Boy Marshmallow or a Girl Marshmallow?
ERIC: Marshall is a boy, about 10 years old. He was once a real boy and enjoyed eating marshmallows so much, one night he turned into one. They say you are what you eat. I'm sure he was warned of the possible consequences. :)
TOYSREVIL: Any significance to the name "Marshall Mashumaro"?
ERIC: At first his name was Mashumaro which is Japanese for Marshmallow. Simple, straight forward, clean like the toy. (We are huge fans of graphics and character art form Asia.)
Then... we changed to Marshall which is a formal name but when combined with the character and his love of marshmallows, it has a mischievous and boyish quality. We think it fits the character and gave him a bit more individuality. Marshall can be good or evil depending on his mood.
TOYSREVIL: Heck, I'm always down with "evil" LOL :p
ERIC: ... and finally, we decided he needed a surname and so we combined the two. Marshall Mashumaro has a nice feel we think. (We own the domains mashumaro.com + mashumarokids.com ... hmmm what could we be up to?)
TOYSREVIL: More marshmallow-folk and kin!!!!??? In time, I reckon, I will bug thee to bits about that ... So how has the production of the toy been thus far, Eric?
ERIC: It took all of us to produce Marshall with everyone working hard to get him just right. Joe Somers (owner Squibbles Ink) took our drawings and made a terrific sculpt which really brought the character to life. Joe also flew back and forth to China several times and has overseen the production. Kirby and Whitney Kerr at Rotofugi gave us a tremendous opportunity when they decided to produce our toy and Rotofugi is an awesome place just to hang out.. We are so pleased to work with all of them.
TOYSREVIL: And we be pleased to see them finally come to fruition, and the toy world would be cheerier with them, IMHO!
The adorable Marshall visits Japan and China- and makes new friends! *manly-giggles*
(When are you gonna drop by Singapore, Marshall MashumaroooOOOOOoooo?)
Size Comparisons:
Marshall first made his 3D-appearance as a pre-production proto
