'Worst Character Design' for The Avengers Movie (#SPOILER WARNING)
Instead of a straight-up single Movie Review for The Avengers, I'm going to 'nominate' and 'award' a series of scenes for the movie, which in all attempts and purposes, will be **EXTREMELY SPOILERIFFIC** = SO BE WARNED!
Here are the Short-Listed candidates for 'Worst Character Design' (aka 'Costume"):
Nominee #1: THOR
WHY: He looked like a poprock-n-roll cosplay-singer from the 70s, with a fire-engine-red colored drape-cape and bare uninspired forearms. His hair was far from glamorous, and frankly irked me more than I should have allowed a fictional character in a film, to. The majesty seen in his own film has devolved into a visual parody amidst the humans populating the Heli-carrier.
Funny tho, I could embrace the comicbook versions, and may even have relished the notion - but in an obvious direct adaptation of the Ultimates comic (which ironically worked as they did not have Thor in a red cape), Thor looked out of place in this instance, IMHO. Or maybe he just needed to wear his winged-helmet when he first appeared, to show off his 'difference' to the mortals, IMHO.
Nominee #2: CAPTAIN AMERICA
WHY: The new suit is pretty hilarious, and as ludicrous as his helmet. I do not expect a pair of 'relief 3D-wings', but I sort of wished the "Stars-n-Stripes" did not adorn a pseudo-wannabe-exo-suit with all the sharp design-angles, IMHO. Ironically, the WW2 version was more … 'respectable'. Perhaps this is just a ploy for a subsequent visual evolution, for when Steve Rogers dons a new costume in his own next film (pure speculation on my part) representing Rogers get more 'engaged' in the present world? Of course I am over thinking it, because the alternative is just 'bad design', isn't it?
WINNER: BLACK WIDOW
WHY: To be frank, the only reason why she is listed here, was because they had showed her charging up her wrist-gauntlet, but never actually do we see her use it on screen! Oh how I was looking forward to be seeing her use her "venom-stings"!
I felt cheated a little bit here, truth be told, although her skin-tight suit could have done with a little more design accents here and there, otherwise she is just a deep-sea-diver clad in her sexy submersible suit, sans flipper-boots. But am sure she'll make them flipper-boots look hawt tho LOL
