WHAT-IS: "Alice in Borderland (今際の国のアリス)" is a Japanese science fiction thriller drama television series based on the manga of the same name by Haro Aso (Info).
The series is directed by Shinsuke Sato. It stars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya as allies trapped in an abandoned Tokyo forced to compete in dangerous games, the type and difficulty represented by playing cards, to extend "visas" that, if expired, result in the player's execution by lasers being shot from the sky.
Themed against "Alice in Wonderland", actor Kento Yamazaki plays "Ryōhei Arisu" ("Alice"), while Tao Tsuchiya is "Yuzuha Usagi" ("Usagi" is "Rabbit" in Japanese). Nijirō Murakami plays the charismatic "Shuntarō Chishiya" ("Chesire Cat")... In S1, Nobuaki Kaneko played "Takeru Danma" AKA "Hatter" ("Mad Hatter") ... and so it goes, get it now?

The first season premiered on the Netflix streaming service on December 10, 2020, while the second season was released on December 22, 2022. The third season was announced on September 27, 2023. Consisting of 8 episodes each season, you can still watch them here on Netflix. I have since watched both seasons twice and enjoyed every moment of it, even if I have zero experience with the manga source, cheers.
