FIREFLY To Be Animated

FIREFLY is set to "return" with upcoming new ANIMATED Series, as announced at Awesome Con in Washington, DC (March 15, 2026) during a reunion panel!

The animated series is in development with animation by ShadowMachine (www / Insta), with a concept sketch since been revealed as well to help the hype.

Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are attached as showrunners and have a completed script. Series creator Joss Whedon is apparently "not actively involved" with the animated series. With the "ongoing scandals" plaguing his name, I wonder how the show will fare, especially as it was his brand of humour/storytelling that had gotten me hooked with the series in the first place, over twenty years ago tho... :p

But alas this is not a "done deal", as neither a studio nor distributor/streamer has been secured. "The last piece we need is a home. And for that we need you. Like this post." shared Nathan Fillion. I am unsure if this is what folks might call "a leaked-Deadpool-move", but...

WHAT-IS: Firefly is a 2002 American space Western drama television series, created by writer and director Joss Whedon, under his Mutant Enemy Productions label. Whedon served as an executive producer, along with Tim Minear.

The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters living aboard Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things."

Firefly premiered in the United States on the Fox network on September 20, 2002. It was canceled after 11 of the 14 produced episodes were aired.

A silver screen feature film titled "Serenity" premiered in 2005 - which jump started my affection for the sci-fi property, and back-tracked to the TV series via DVD, because way too much time had lapsed lol

I love my FIREFLY+SERENITY. I've said so before, and I'll say it again, although admittedly, my fervour had somewhat diluted thru the years of neglect and inactivity ... but now, I reckon the engines are starting to rev up, over twenty years too late later?

And this isn't the "first time" we've seen/we'll see Firefly "animated", with this following fan-made teaser from @artworkofstephenbyrne first featured circa 2016...!

I never did score any of THESE toys tho... :p
