a candlelight chronology

:: LIFE IN SINGAPORE ::
6:45pm
in the midst of checking emails and uploading work-photos, the entire world went black. or rather, the power/electricity tripped in the house lah (*heh*). luckily the sky wasn't as dark, yet. looking for a torchlight was a bitch. and even finding one was a cruel joke; coz the batteries were flat. the household D/B-box yielded no reprieve. the external junction box stared right back at us silently; dangling wires forming what seemed like a smirk.

6:55pm
calling up the Power Supple company proved to be an ordeal, with stated numbers (on the monthly credit/bills slip) being totally bogus. finally singapore telco operators gave us the accurate emergency-number ... to find out that ours wasn't the only household with the malady, "someone is on their way to check it out".

7:05pm
thoughts of my impending work hanging online in limbo overcame me, which soon drifted to "hunger". a romantic dinner by candlelight (NOT) had my food (packed fried Nor Hiang and mixed-veggie-rice) looking all the same; just dark pieces of items i dutifully stuffed into my mouth and screaming belly. how vulnerable we seemed ... how fragile our disposition, as we sat helpless in the candlelight ... how utterly rubbish for feeling alla these nonsensical existential B/S!
tis just "electricity", innit? (or is it?)

worrying if the blackout might last the entire night, my mind came up with options to quell the dread: like going out to the neighbourhood shops for a walk, or even catch a movie nearby ... loadsa stuff to do, innit? just haveta tell me clients the next day; "there was a power-trip last night lor", innit? they'd understand, won't they? *heh*

7:25pm
the flickering of the fluorescent tubes was a slight jolt to our already in-tuned-with-the-candlelight-senses. and then there was light. candles were put out and we resumed our nightly activities. for my parents, t'was switching on the telly to watch yet another Korean weepie ... all the while not realizing nor knowing t'was just a tease ...

7:30pm
bathed in sudden darkness, i wondered why the two Korean leads were both on their knees and a girl crying her eyes out, alongside a turbulent beachside.

7:35pm
i could see my food again. and i found out that both men loved the same girl.

7:40pm
it wasn't "amusing" anymore. not least for my brother, who've decided to bathe Dino (our family dog) prior to that juncture (*snicker*).

7:45pm
lights are back on. a second girl had appeared (with a sniper rifle in hand), who apparently loved one of the men, and throughout the crying and confusion, had shot the lead actress, by mistake ... should've left the teevee off ... but at least this time, we kept the candles on the table a wee bit longer ...

9:05pm
the Power Supply company actually called me back to ask if everything was alright! surprised and appreciative :) ... now tis back to work (and of coz this inane entry lah! *bleh*)

Obvious Tips in Event Of Power Trip (at home or at work):
[1] have torchlights and working-batteries at an easily accessible location.
[2] have candles and safety matches (or lighter) at an easily accessible location. (altho not reachable by kiddies, eh)
[3] charge your handphone/mobiles becoz you can at least use the screen-lights for partial illumination.
[4] have your power-supple emergency numbers updated and ever ready/available. Singapore Emergency Power Supply 24-hour Hotline: 1800-778-8888
[5] do not shower nor bathe any pets in-between power-supply fluctuations/blackouts.

go see a nightfall here ... *heh*
