birthday soup

BIRTHDAYSOUP
we have a "tradition" in our family household ~ on the day of a birthday, we would be treated to a bowl of homemade sweetened soup, filled with (dried) longan ("long-yen" in mandarin, directly translates to *dragon's eye*) and hardboiled-eggs; two for the birthday-person and a single one for everyone else. the entire family would have a bowl each and would sit down together and have a mini-celebration and happy chat, regardless of the time and circumstance ... the egg stands for "birth", while the longan represents a "sweet-life" ...

today @ the minute past midnight; we celebrated my dad's 64th with a piping hot bowl each. and the warmth that overwhelms me is not of the temperature of the soup, but of the silent-tears of grateful thanks that i should offer, for the successful heart-bypass operation my dad had recently endured and that we are celebrating his birthday today ... and the soup is the bestest soup i have so far tasted in my life ...
