Toy-Review: DIY Toasterboy by Mongar Toys
WHO-IS: TOASTERBOY is a resin figure with an "electric" toaster for a head. Created by Indonesian-designer Erwin Cahyono of Mongar Toys, the figure includes two pieces of "bread" removable from the toasterhead. This is the DIY Edition of the resin figure, hand-cast by Erwin himself, with the parts coming separately - for easy assembly. Measuring 3.5 inches tall and priced at a ridiculously affordable US$15 (sans postage) - this is an open edition.
PACKAGING: Mongartoys figure are resin and totally handmade . The sculpting, molding, casting, finishing, painting process and packaging are all handmade by Erwin himself. The DIY Edition comes housed in a generic brown carton box with a sticker up front to indicate the product within. And inside, you will vend a delightful accordian-style fold-out "manual" of the figure. As you can see from the images, the parts all come "loose" and are packed within a ziplocked bag. I like the simplicity of this, and embodies a indie-artist-DIY aesthetic that does not include the cost of packaging, IMHO.
FIGURINE: With it's simplistic body-form, the uniqueness of Toasterboy, is without a doubt, his toaster-"head"! And while the exterior is smooth to the touch and sans bubbles (kudos for that) the joints - are perhaps a tad "loose" for the figure to be able to remain "firm". The joints are fitting, but not immediately "tight", hence the peg-n-hole aspect of the joints might not be ideally strong against shelf-dives.
The figure does not seemed to be primed for direct paint-ons, but nothing a little work from your end would not alleviate.
Shown above is the Silver Edition of Toasterboy alongside the DIY Edition [featured] whose limbs are actually glued attached, so there is no fear for them going loose.
WRAP-UP: Seriously - for US$15, this is a virtual-steal of a hand-made figure, IMHO! Email themongar@gmail.com to inquire about postage costs and/or request yours today! Tell'em TOYSREVIL sentry!
