The Rebel Daughters at Library@Esplanade (June 22)
WHAT'S HAPPENING: "The Rebel Daughters is a movement devoted to the female urban art practitioners in the South East Asian region. It is not a crew. Get schooled, join us on Sunday, 22 June, 2pm at the Esplanade library for a brief artist talk and get to know the participants from Indonesia, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand. There's also a small BBQ party and paint jam at queen street at 5pm. "
The Solidarity Movement present REBEL DAUGHTERS: MASSIVE AND UNITED
"Graffiti is on its bleeding edge in many different cities around the world. More and more people pick up the can for many different reasons, from it being a mere juvenile move or one to express existentialist notions, or even just plain old self- expression.
As it is, graffiti is an art discipline that requires a lot of physical activity, and bears the stigma of being dangerous on so many levels: the nature of it, the places that one chooses to do it, all the climbing and urban spelunking it entails, and getting caught --the kind of activity that men are more likely to engage with. While population states that there are more women than men, and as much as graffiti is widespread, as with any industry, women are under-represented, especially in Asia. In this region, cultures and traditions dictate an even more conservative social norm and expectation on women, and given the mischievous nature of graffiti, it is not easy to find a lot of them who practice this craft.
Many are called but only a few are chosen, and in this case, much fewer women.
As part of The Solidarity Movement’s goal to unite different graffiti and street art scenes across the region, we are aiming to pay special attention to the very few women who practice the craft in the region to help shed light on the understanding of graffiti from a female perspective, by women who actually do it.
Following these said objectives and taking cues from past events held internationally such as ‘Women on Walls’ and ‘Fem Graff’, we are inviting at least 17 female graffiti practitioners around the region to come together in Singapore and together celebrate the unique experience that we have as women breaking through traditional expectations to prove ourselves worthy where it matters: on the streets. This is to inspire and demonstrate to people just what big things women can accomplish together and even more importantly, on their own.
Just like any other Solidarity programs, Rebel Daughters will include artist talks, an art exposition, a Sunday barbeque, and a whole lot of painting and heavy lifting. Lastly and most importantly, we hope to inspire more girls in the region to pick up the can, and in time, Rebel Daughters will be an annual all-female graffiti festival that would travel to different cities in the region.
The SOLIDARITY21 Movement is the principal program initiated by RSCLS to create a regional sharing network for urban arts. It is also a program that seeks to document, archive and provide an understanding and education of street art and graffiti as an art form in the context of each different city in Asia."
