Batman Villains For the Silver Screen
SPOILER WARNING: If you've not watched Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT,
DO NOT read any further, for there be spoilers ahead!
"He is dead as a door nail." - Aaron Eckhart says of his titular role as Two-Face in The Dark Knight, as confirmed by director Chris Nolan when queried by Eckhart: "You're dead". [via SHH]
Dent's dead, baby, Dent's dead.
As the rumor-mill of Batman-3 (B3) begins ramping up on overdrive with the box-office success of TDK, various fan-made posters have been making their rounds on the www (which I will not post here) ... and mumblings about Angelina Jolie as Catwoman (please no - any idiot would recognize her lips in and out of her mask in a second - much less a Dark Knight-detective - d'oh!) and Johnny Depp as The Riddler (I'm down with that) is keeping the Bat-hype alive and kicking ... and sure as heck's Robin's not going to make an appearance (as insistent as Nolan is) - who do YOU think should be cast as Batman's villain in the next installment of the re-energized movie franchise? And what villain/s you WANT to see?
CLICK THRU to see a select few my personal picks (and why).
Shown here are some villains from past Bat-flicks for reference (p/s: There is no Joker nor Two-Face, of coz / most images via movievillains.com)
It would be safe to say that the direction of subsequent movies in the Batman-franchise will and should not venture into "super-powers" territory as yet (until of coz when the other DC superheroes appear, primed for the eventual Justice League of America movie, innit?) and hence it's villains would similarly be non-super-powered, nor possess supernatural abilities (that would be too hokey) and hopefully not too mutated due to radiation exposure / poisoning or any other forms of comicbook-spandex origins. Martial-art abilities would be de-rigour, so that Bats can still bust a move or three. Or it could go by way of technology-based battles, within the realms of Gotham-believability, of coz.
...and the TRE-nominees for Batman Villains for Batman-3 Movie aaaaare...
TALIA AL GHUL / CATWOMAN
Either way, Bruce needs to git sum (the form-fitting cod-piece of the Batsuit does not curb one's libido, I suspect), and either characters may be able to fill the void (even if only temporarily) left behind by Rachel's death, and yet provide a level of pathos, when they eventually breaks lil Brucie's heart by the movie's end, naturally.
*sniffles*
They appear in the nick of time to provide safety and comfort, when the Batman is being chased and hunted by Gotham, as he struggles to stop the maniacs crawling out of the woodwork to fill the void in Gotham's criminal world ... but little does he know (or perhaps he already does) betrayal is inevitable. Talia has the finances to rival that of Wayne, while Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) possess a similar desire for adventure, as does Bruce (who refuses to acknowledge said desire).
Talia al Ghul would be a "logical" addition, and a legacy tied to her father; Ra's Al Ghul (Batman Begins). Catwoman would be purely for eye-candy and for producing toys, IMHO. Hey, Bat-dude's busy evading capture by the cops, and he has time to go catch a cat-burglar? sexy or otherwise? dude.
BTW, both would think Bruce's battle-scars are "sexy". And "leather" would have to be mandatory for either or both characters. *cough*
HARLEY QUINN
Harley Quinn appears to seek revenge for the death of her beloved "Mr. J"? And she begins by making Bats fall in love with her, or at least "tries" to (Still with the "love-angle") .... okay, or at the very least a distraction of lust? ... as much lust as a punk-goth techno-lolita can muster ... (but Riddler likes.) - or as Alfred would exclaim: "Bat-Jailbait"
THE RIDDLER
"Edward Nigma" is not exactly right in the head, 24-7 ... but when lucid, he possesses an extreme intellect to rival that of Batman (a foil of who The Calculator is currently, in the comicbook villainy-hierarchy of the DC-universe). It will not be a battle of force, but of wills and wit. The Riddler figures out who Batman really is. The Riddler will not have a pimpin' cane, but has nigh-hi technology at his disposal. The Riddler also needs a pawn, a co-conspiritor, which the revenge-seeking Harley Quinn fits in perfectly.
But Green is not just his signature color, for he too grows jealous of Harley's fascination with Bats ... and crimes of passion more often than not, have very nasty consequences ...
BLACK MASK
Altho not iconic to Batman (outside of comicbooks), Black Mask would make a "realistic" addition, with a void in the criminal realm of Gotham that needs to be filled, a variety of villains (inspired by The Joker) crawls out from beneath the sewers (and I do not mean Killer Croc, no I do not). The "mask" is in tribute to both Two-Face and Joker, and also may strike "fear" into the criminal underworld. Imagine a Batman-level-character gone-criminal, with a nasty mask, and the memory of The Joker still fresh = hell yeah the criminals cower.
Altho I'd "advise" folks not to have red blood splatter on his skull-mask, coz it'll look like Marvel Comics' Red Skull, innit? *cough*
FIRE FLY
Firefly likes to play with fire. And we have seen fire as a symbolic harbinger of destruction and cataylstic change in both Batman Begins (Batman being set aflame by Scarecrow / fire in Wayne Manor) and TDK (Rachel dies in an explosion / and money is burnt by The Joker). Wayne/Bat's baptism of fire is over, now he has to face it. And a re-envisioned Firefly could bring it? Or would this be too literal?
MR. ZSASZ
A variation of Mr. Zsasz briefly "appeared" in "Batman Begins" and with the numerous scars / marks on his body (the numbers of victims fall prey to this serial killer) would make him a realistic fit into Nolan's vision of Gotham, IMHO - but then again, perhaps not as a primary villain, and no one's out to "glamorize" serial killers, aren't they? ... heck, a whole lotta criminals are still on the loose from the Arkum Asylum breakout in the Narrows, innit?
... aaaaand I am done for now. Peep Bat-Villains galore on Wikipedia to gather your own list of favs (share with us in the comments section, if you so please :p)
BUT if "they" really wanna go "super-powers"? I'm personally down to see a cape (ie: Superhero) gone bad - instead of a new villain, due to whatever reasons - that the Bat has to bring down. Heck, since Warner's "decision" to have their upcoming DC-superhero flicks go down the "dark path", anyone's up for contention, innit? ... or they could always share villains, especially with David Goyer's SUPERMAX aka Green Arrow-movie - coming out? heh.
DO NOT read any further, for there be spoilers ahead!
