Kaiju Monster Invasion

(Art Basel Miami Beach)
Opens December 3, 2008 (8-10pm)
and exhibits thru January 4, 2009.
Kaiju is roughly translated from Japanese as “giant monster.” They are the heroes and villains of a pop-culture genre born in the 1950’s, featuring the likes of Godzilla, Ultraman, and Gamera. The influence of Kaiju on Pop Surrealism and Lowbrow Art is easy to see. The artists at the heart of the movement grew up with ubiquitous vinyl toys of these monsters made in Japan. The Art-Toy movement that subsequently arose can be seen as a reinterpretation of Kaiju through a Pop Surrealist filter.

During Art Basel Miami Beach in early December, the exhibition Kaiju Monster Invasion will bring the most exciting and subversive artists from Japan and the United States into a single venue, showcasing the various interpretations of Kaiju in both Eastern and Western cultures. Curated by Harold Golen, the show aims to break new ground while simultaneously honoring the rich history of Kaiju.
