#DailyDoodlers On TOYSREVIL: Marcus Lee #bandofdoodlers #bodindetention

WHAT: In anticipation of their first group exhibition "Detention Class" at Detention Barracks on July 11th, TOYSREVIL will spotlight artists from Band of Doodlers in this #DailyDoodlers blog-feature, with a lil'Q&A and doodles! Enjoy the read and RSVP on the Events Facebook Page!

TOYSREVIL: Please share with everyone reading; what is your doodling-nick, and who are you? And why do you do the things you do?

MARCUS LEE: Hello, I am Marcus, a graphic designer based in Singapore. My works are often inspired by street art, intricate motifs and as well as Asian cultures. I strongly believe that the devil lies in the details, thus my modus operandi often focuses on observing and redesigning each individual element, and finally fusing them together to depict a story.

TOYSREVIL: What is your dayjob? And why do you love to doodle? And what do you love to doodle?

MARCUS LEE: I am currently pursuing my BA degree (Design Communication) at Lasalle. My fascination for graphic design with its grids and structures, the ability to manipulate spaces ties in perfectly with my love for doodling. The idea of filling up space with doodles yet needing to control its flow is like walking on a tightrope; the sense of ecstasy while you hold your breath treading that fine line.

Mostly I doodle general mediums, anything from a robot to a penguin. What matters to me is the insertion and design of the patterns or motifs that I can introduce into the medium, because ultimately they are what draws the viewer in for a closer look. I work predominantly with black and white ink. Presently, I am working on a series focusing on masks worn by combatants in warring cultures.

TOYSREVIL: What did you do wrong, to be sent to "Detention Class"? And what can we expect to see from you in "Detention Class"?

MARCUS LEE: Maybe it’s my penchant for working on the small things for too long. Haha.

Detention Class will feature a wide array of reinterpreted artworks based on childhood memories. Each artist brings to the table his or her own set of specialisation, and it is always inspiring to observe their works. I am often humbled by how they manipulate their tools to create different imaginative pictorials. The learning curve is when everyone comes to work together and varying styles, techniques and visions clash and complement all at once. We invite you to drop by Detention Class and witness it for yourself.
