Shawn Wee’s #TopTenToysof2018

Hi everyone, I’m Shawn! Some of you may be familiar with my profile on Instagram if you are a collector of be@rbricks. 2018 was a tough year for a be@rbrick collector like myself. The releases are by far the most in terms of the number of models, with United States seemingly as the market of focus in 2018. Having to shortlist 10 amongst many that I have bought this year is way too tough, but still, everyone has their favourites.

#10 Billionaire Boys Club (BBC) x FDMTL 400% Be@rbrick:

Released in November 2018, the be@rbrick collaboration between FDMTL and BBC flew off the shelves as soon as they were launched. As usual, this toy is part of an array of apparels between both brands.

Genius or lazy? Whatever it is, it didn’t stop me from buying it. Love this piece for the iconic astronaut printed on matte denim design.

#9 Mika Ninagawa Anemone 1000% Be@rbrick:

I have a soft spot for floral designs – Mika Ninagawa, Marimekko, Azuma Makoto and Takashi Murakami, just to name a few. Ninagawa’s Anemone design is definitely one of the best designs in the series of be@rbricks released since Be@rbrick Worldwide Tour in 2011.

#8 Tokyo Tower 1000% Be@rbrick:

The landmark symbol of Japan has always been beauty in its own rights. Since the launch of the 400% for its 55th anniversary, there had been speculations on 1000% being released. This finally happened in end 2018, when the 1000% was released in its signature orange illumination.

Having seen numerous pictures of Tokyo Towers online and visited them myself were the main reasons for adding them into my collection.

#7 Bape XXV sMulti Foil 400% Be@rbrick:

I am not a huge Bape fan myself, but when it comes to be@rbricks they are simply irresistible. For the first time in many years, Bape launched a be@rbrick without shark face or camo for its 25th anniversary. Bape retained its ostentatious colours on the toy, while setting off on a different design concept. Truly a milestone piece for Bape.

#6 Black Manekineko Peko Chan 400% Be@rbrick:

Despite getting collectors’ fatigue due to the rampant release of Peko be@rbricks in 2018, Black Manekineko Peko Chan was one single piece that I could not miss.

The mascot of Fujiya Co. is versatile enough to go through numerous design changes and still retain its identity. Black Manekineko Peko Chan is probably one of the few that has a different colour scheme from its often vibrantly coloured predecessors.

#5 Louis Vuitton Vivienne World Tour:

Vivienne has grown to be the mascot for Louis Vuittion in the past year. The Spring/Summer 2017 piece was the 1st piece in signature Monogram, followed by an extensive Pre Fall/Winter 2018 collection. It was a love at first sight with its quality build and luxury branding, hence I made the move to own a piece of exquisite piece of craftsmanship in my humble home.
Luxury collectibles are still uncommon, but with the launch of Dior Men x Kaws, it might be interesting to see how the luxury toy market will go.

#4 Billionaire Boys Club (BBC) x Neighborhood 400% Be@rbrick:

A Neighborhood Japan collaboration with Billionaire Boys Club (BBC) first appeared at Hypefest back in October 2018, followed by a wider release in Neighborhood stockists. The first be@rbrick collaboration for Neighborhood, truly a collector’s piece for all Neighborhood fans.

#3 Undefeated x Mickey 400% Be@rbrick:

Came as a surprise to everyone, The True Mickey Exhibition, held in New York, announced another shock drop following the Fragment Design x Mickey in 100%/400%/1000%. Inspired by Blaine Gibson’s iconic copper “Partners” statue displayed in Disney theme parks, the Mickey was created in similar colours, with the Undefeated logo on the back.

The finishing and interesting colours (it’s pretty rare to see a copper be@rbrick) prompted me to spend a considerable sum on this work of art.

#2 Medicom x Sacai Fall/Winter 2018 100%/400% Be@rbrick:

Sacai, founded by Chitose Abe, focuses on hybridization fashionwear for women. I first took notice of Sacai’s items during a trip to Japan with my wife back in 2015, when they had a launch with Nike on a range of sportswear and sneakers.

It wasn’t until 2017 Sacai released the first be@rbrick for the Fall/Winter 2017 range. The Fall/Winter 2018 set marks the 2nd collaboration between Medicom and Sacai. This piece, in my opinion, was somewhat a breakthrough since Medicom was able to replicate the runway piece onto a be@rbrick. The brand itself was enough to draw me to get the be@rbrick, but the details such as metal buttons, small zippers, nylon, wool, cotton made it a must-buy for me.

Will be looking forward to the next collaboration, hopefully a Spring/Summer piece!

#1 Yasuto Sasada Kujaku (孔雀) 1000% Be@rbrick:

One of my favourites that is possibly not very popular with many. Yasuto Sasada breakthrough came when he worked with Yohji Yamamoto back in 2014. Here’s an extract of the artwork that inspired the design of the be@rbrick. The attention to detail and the designs were the factors that got me into buying the be@rbrick.

Sasada is due to release another piece in collaboration with Ground Y by Yohji Yamamoto sometimes in January 2019.
