KING RACHA MALING Series by Raha Rodriguez
Spotted these by The Philippines-based Visual Artist / Freelance Designer Raha Rodriguez on his Insta @raharodriguez, and bugged the man to share with us MORE about his "King Racha Maling Series"!
Featured here are limited prototype casts (of the actual item which will soon be unveiled) currently on consignment sales via @vinylonvinyl, so you might want to enquire for prices and avaiability.
The medium used are Epoxy Polymer, Casting Stone, and the "Maling Can" - one of the main things that caught my eye, as I have been a a food-fan of the "MaLing" brand of luncheon meat, or "Spam" in some cultures, and predominant in Filipino cuisine (Which unfortunately is currently facing a ban, due to suspected being affected by the African swine fever (ASF) virus). The figure is finished in matte acrylic.
Aesthetically, what caught my attention as well was the memory of "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters" and characters from "H.R. Pufnstuf" by Sid and Marty Krofft of the 70s!
"This is basically a self portrait from which I channeled my personal experiences into cute and colorful toys. It's about the conserved-kept feelings we have that eventually oozes out." - shard Raha Rodriguez, "As a culture we are often tough that we should try to avoid unpleasant emotions at all costs, but eventually we reach a certain breaking point. Like spoiled canned goods that swell (and explode) due to spoilage or when we damage/dent the can."
