Original SPAWN ACTION FIGURE & COMIC REMASTERED (2020) Now On Kickstarter

When Todd McFarlane introduced his SPAWN comic book creation as a "action figure" back in the mid-90s, it was not too long after his comicbook from Image Comics launched in 1992, and to see the insane details in a "action figure" as Spawn (and his line-up) had been presented blister-packed staring back at you from the hallowed toy-display, was quite literally mind-blowing and without a doubt a game-changer in a particular hobby-genre, where the name "toy" was a reflection of most of the figures released then. My head felt like the spirit of "Hamburger head" = deformed with excitement and NEED to collect EVERYTHING McFarlane Toys!

SPAWN and its various incarnations after, put the notion of expensive lux statuettes into a PVC sculpted figure, along with its own dioramic stands, changed the landscape of "collectible toys" then, at least in my humbled eyes. View the history of the toy-line for yourselves here.

It is without a doubt, how a whole generation of geeks and fellow collectors like myself, started - more earnestly than before on a "casual" level (*cough* ... blame it all on Spawn :p) - with a satisfying mindset that THIS were not JUST TOYS (anymore), and that these were ART PIECES, LIKE FINE ART SCULPTURES, and we could thump our collective chests in unison! Not that it worked with naysayers, of course ... but, it felt "justified".

... The "justification" of designer collectibles however, is a ongoing work-in-progress... *cough*

Twenty-five years later, McFarlance has just launched his Kickstarter for a REMASTERED version of the original SPAWN Action Figure!
"This figure will be 7 inches tall and come with a huge folding cape and weapon. The articulation in this version will be more than double what the original toy had, and the included comic cover will be re-drawn by the international award-winning artist and creator of the Spawn character, Todd McFarlane."

There will be only four levels: A CLASSIC costume version. A MODERN costume version (with new head), an ARTIST PROOF (what we’re calling the ‘black & white) and lastly the 3-PACK bundle which will include a Classic, Modern and Black & White figure (The latter two figures getting new head sculpts).

For a pricing reference: A CLASSIC SPAWN - which features a "classic costume in mask", folding cape, weapon(s), base and over 20 moving parts. Plus NEW original comic cover art by Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane - all housed in a resealable clamshell and a collector box and slipcover for protection and display = will set you back US$40 (excluding shipping). Delivery is November 2020.

Before the Kickstarter started, and having the figure on show at New York Toy Fair in February this year, folks have been exclaiming; "Why do a Kickstarter? Why can't McFarlane Toys fund their own production of this?" ... to which I now say, "Does it matter?" ... In a way somewhat reminding me of all the times past when folks as me: "Why buy comics?".

With a (initial) Pledge Goal of US$100,000 (Yes, that's 5 zeros) when the Kickstarter launched on April 8th, as of my post today April 11th, the tally has since passed the Million Dollars-mark. Go read what the new Stretch Goals are, and how you can join in reliving the glory of SPAWN here. Spawn Kickstarter ends Saturday May 9th, 2020.
